CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos need to add just one more to their 14-game win streak to head back to the national championship, and they'll get that chance Friday night in Langley, B.C.
The Dinos will open the 2018 Canada West Final Four in a semifinal tilt with the UBC Thunderbirds, with kickoff at 4 p.m. MT Friday, live on CanadaWest.tv. The winner will advance to the conference championship game Saturday against the winner between host Trinity Western and Alberta.
DOGFIGHT AT McMAHON
The Dinos qualified for the Final Four on the strength of a tight 2-1 win over Saskatchewan in the conference quarter-final last Sunday at McMahon Stadium. The Huskies gave the Dinos everything they could handle, tying the game midway through the second half – but
Amy Mikuska scored yet another game-winning goal for the Dinos in the 83rd minute, with a beautiful strike of a free kick just outside the penalty area, to send the Dinos back to the Final Four.
CONSTELLATION OF ALL-STARS
The Dinos dominated the Canada West all-star team, hauling in five of the 11 picks on the first team. Goalkeeper
Lauren Houghton is joined by defenders
Kayla Kreutzer and
Talia White, along with forwards
Maddison Fritze and
Montana Leonard on the first team, while freshman
Sofia Mondaca earned a spot on the Canada West all-rookie team. It marks the most all-star selections the Dinos have had since 1997, when the Stephanie O'Neill-led Dinos were on the verge of the program's first national title.
WEST COAST REMATCH
One of the most high-quality wins the Dinos put up this season was at UBC back on Sept. 15 on the back end of a road trip that saw them win in Victoria the previous night.
Amy Mikuska scored the game's only goal just eight minutes into the contest to lead the Dinos to a 1-0 win – the third in a string of victories that has now extended to 14 heading into the Final Four.
