CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team enters its final home weekend with a nine-game winning streak this weekend as they are set to play against UNBC and MacEwan University.
The Dinos play both games at home this weekend at the West Varsity Pitch, first with a game against the UNBC Timberwolves at 12 p.m. on Saturday and the second against MacEwan at noon on Sunday.
THE STREAK CONTINUES
The Dinos successfully pushed their winning streak to nine last week when they played back to back against the Pronghorns in Lethbridge and in Calgary.
Damiane Sawatzky's goal in the first half was all the Dinos needed to defeat the Lethbridge Pronghorns 1-0 Thursday night in Lethbridge. Friday at McMahon Stadium, the Dinos wrapped up the sweep, winning 2-0. A solid second half performance pushed the Dinos to the win.
Montana Leonard's shot was the first goal of the game off
Amy Mikuska's corner kick, and an own goal 10 minutes later pushed the final score to 2-0.
In their nine-game win streak, the Dinos have allowed only one goal, picking up eight shutouts in the process.
HOME FIELD UP FOR GRABS
The sweep of Lethbridge pushed the Dinos to a 9-1-0 record and first place in the Prairie Division. With a 10-point lead on Mount Royal and just four games to play, one more victory on the year will clinch home field for the Dinos in the opening round of the Canada West playoffs – and one more win would set a program record. Twice before the Dinos have won nine games in a regular season, most recently in 2016, but a 10th win would mark the first double-digit total in program history.
QUOTABLE
Head coach of the Dinos,
Troye Flannery stated that "
Montana Leonard scored an absolute cracker of a goal" in the second game against Lethbridge and noted that there was visible team effort put into the game on Friday. Flannery also said that he would like the team to "…play with a little more intent."
