EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat in the final game of the regular season against the University of Alberta Pandas on Sunday at Foote Field.
A first-half goal from Tara Simonot and a 12-save shutout from goalkeeper Tessa Borrelli helped preserve the Pandas lead, as the Dinos were unable to find a way back into the contest.
The Dinos finish the Canada West regular season with a 12-2 record, while Alberta conclude with a record of 3-9-2.
Alberta struck in the 19th minute. Simonot found the net through a header with help from the crossbar following a cross by Erin Hope for her first goal of the season, which stood as the only goal of the game.
Calgary controlled much of the play and outshot the Pandas 17-5, putting 12 of those shots on target. Mykena Walker led the Dinos with four shots, three of them on goal, while Erica Mysko, who played the first half, put both of her attempts on target. Borrelli answered every one of them, stopping seven shots in the first half and five in the second.
Nicki Filek played the full 90 minutes in goal for Calgary and stopped both shots she faced on target.
The Dinos had their best looks of the second half in the final 15 minutes, with Walker, Kaleigh Major and Navy Louma all testing Alberta's defence, but the Pandas were able to hold on for the win.
The Dinos will host the Canada West playoffs, with their first game held on Oct. 30 at 7:00 PM at McMahon Stadium.
