EDMONTON – Emma Clark scored in the 89th minute to give the MacEwan University Griffins to a 2-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team on Saturday at Clarke Stadium, handing the Dinos their first loss of the regular season.
Calgary controlled much of the play, outshooting MacEwan 24-9 and earning six corner kicks to the Griffins' two. The Dinos also hit the crossbar twice, with Kaleigh Major doing so in the first half and Erica Mysko late in the second.
MacEwan opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Ivy Kunn converted for her fourth goal of the season. Calgary answered back before halftime, as Mykena Walker received the ball from Julia Kittelson, drifted infield and struck low into the bottom corner in the 42nd minute to level the game 1-1 at the break.
The Dinos kept the pressure on in the second half, with Walker, Ella Djuranic, Addi White and Sofia DiGiacomo among those testing Griffins goalkeeper Sabrina Alexander, who made six saves in all. Major led all players with five shots, while DiGiacomo added four.
The game stayed level until the closing minutes, when Clark finished a chance for her first goal of the season, with Kunn collecting the assist. Cheridan Johnson made three saves in goal for Calgary.
Despite the result, the Dinos remain first in the Canada West standings. And the Dinos will return to action Sunday, Oct. 25 when they travel to face the University of Alberta Pandas at noon for their final game of the regular season. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
MacEwan will host the Mount Royal University Cougars on Sunday, Oct. 25.
