The University of Calgary
Dinos Ringette team captured the Tier 1 Gold medal at the 2018 University Challenge Cup in Guelph, Ontario December 27 - 31. The victory was the Dinos 9th gold medal at UCC competition since the championship was started in 1999. Dinos last victory was in 2016 as they won gold on home ice as hosts of the 2016 UCC championship.
While most University students spend their Christmas break relaxing, the
Dinos Ringette team was in full competition mode. The Dinos made the trek to Guelph Ontario for the 2018 University Challenge Cup on Dec 26
th. There were 14 team representing Universities from as far east as Halifax. The Dinos started off the round robin Dec 27
th, playing University of Ottawa, the reigning champion and came up on the short end of the score board losing 3 to 1. That was the one and only loss for the Dinos in the tournament, next going up against U of A seeing them skate to a 2 - 2 tie. Dec 28
th saw the Dinos play Dalhousie, jet lag and three hours of sleep were not an issue and the Dinos closed out the Tiger's with a convincing 8 to 1 win. On the 29
th the Dinos matched up against the Guelph Gryphons, the Dinos once again came out on top and bladed to a 5 to 3 victory. Also on the 29
th the Dinos played the Lethbridge Pronghorns coming out of the game with a 4 to 4 tie. The domination continued when the Dinos played McMaster chomping their way to a 6 to 3 victory. The round robin play settled out to see the Dinos finish in 2
nd place having to match up vs Dalhousie once again in the semifinal. The Tiger's could not handle the speed of the Dinos seeing Calgary skate to a 7 to 2 victory sending the Dinos to the finals vs Ottawa the only team that delivered the Dinos a loss in the tournament. Dec 31
st saw the Dinos dominate Ottawa from the opening whistle. When the extinction was complete, the Dinos roared to a 6 to 0 convincing win.
With the victory in Guelph the Dinos add to their being the champion of UCC competition with a total of 9 championships. Previous Dinos UCC championships include; 2018, 2016, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004
