Ludlow golden on Day 2 of U Sports Championships

SHERBROOKE, Que. - It was a fast night in the pool for the University of Calgary Dinos swim teams as they competed on Day 2 of the U Sports Championships.

Danica Ludlow swam her way to the top of the podium with a 4:06.62. Not only did she bring home the gold medal, her time was a personal best by 2 seconds, and she broke the club record previously held by Olympian Joanne Malar.

The Dinos brought home five more medals, and broke many records on the second night of competition. After tonight's session, the women sit in 4th place overall with 234 points, behind Toronto in third, Montreal in second, and UBC in first. On the men's side, they are third with 290 points, behind Toronto in second, and UBC in first.

Leah Smal started off the night in the 100 backstroke. After a slip off the start, Leah fought her way back into the race and finished 8th. On the men's side, Rob Hill snatched the first medal of the evening with a second place finish behind UBC's Markus Thormeyer. Christ Courtis finished in 4th, narrowly missing the podium with a time of 54.02. Jarod Tsang followed closely behind in 5th with a 54.55.

In the 50 fly, Rachael Grothe had another personal best swim and also broke the club record for the event with her time of 27.14.

Stefanie Schmidt also had a huge swim, placing 6th overall. Her time of 4:15.53 was also a massive 5 second best time. In the 'B' final, Robyn Lee placed 12th overall with a 4:21.79. On the men's side, Peter Brothers' time of 3:48.08 earned him the bronze medal. Teammate Teddy Kalp placed 6th in a 3:53.72. In the 'B' final, Chris Paproski had a huge personal best race, dropping 7 seconds with his time of 3:53.79 that placed 12th overall. Chris Neave finished in 15th overall.

Tianna Rissling brought home her second medal of the competition in the 200 breaststroke, this one silver in color. Her time of 2:23.40 was a new club record and put her in second place behind UBC's Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson. Stephanie Churcher swam in the 'B' final and finished 8th. Ben Blackmon swam the event for the men and placed 6th with a time of 2:13.64.

The final individual event of the evening was the 200 butterfly. Danielle D'Aoust moved up 2 spots from this morning's seed, placing 6th overall with a 2:14.28. On the men's side, Rob Hill was the top male for the Dinos in 6th. Christian Ng was the winner of the 'B' heat, and rookie Mohamed Eldeeb finished in 15th overall.

The 4x200 freestyle relay was the final event of the evening. The women's team consisting of Ludlow, Lee, Smal, and Schmidt placed 5th with a time of 8:16.04. The men had an amazing race, their team of Brothers, Neave, Kalp, and Blondal brought home the bronze medal in a time of 7:16.98.

Another awesome day of competition is in the books for the Dinos. The final day of the U Sport Championships begins again tomorrow at 10 AM (ET).
