SHERBROOKE, Que. - It was an exciting night in the pool for the Dinos on Day 1 of the 2017 U SPORTS Swimming Championships. They carried their fast momentum from the morning through to the evening finals and had an impressive session: with 19 individual swims and 2 relays, the Dinos brought home four medals, a Barbados national record, and many personal best times.
Danica Ludlow started off the night in the 200 freestyle. She held her own the whole race and finished in third place with an impressive 1:56.77, behind UBC's Erika Seltenreich Hodgson in second, and 2016 Olympic medalist Katerine Savard in first. On the men's side,
Teddy Kalp swam in the 'B' final and finished in 16th with a time of 1:49.79. In the 'A' final,
Peter Brothers took 5th place in 1:48.06, and 5th year Chris Neave swam his last individual 200 free of his career and placed 8th.
The next event of the night was the 50 back, with second year
Leah Smal winning the 'B' final. Rookie
Erin Fones in her first ever U Sport final finished in 16th. Chris Courtis impressed on the men's side, swimming to a silver medal and bettering his Barbados National Record in a quick 24.73 seconds.
Jarod Tsang was the next Dino to the wall taking 5th place, and Josh Dow rounded out the 'A' final in 8th.
In the 100 breaststroke,
Tianna Rissling brought home the bronze medal in a time of 1:06.29, just over a 10th of a second behind UBC's Erin Stamp in second, and just 2 tenths of a second behind University of Manitoba's Kelsey Wog in first.
Stephanie Churcher swam in the 'B' final and placed 7th. Ben Blackmon swam in the 'B' final for the men and placed second with a time of 1:02.01.
In the 100 butterfly,
Danielle D'Aoust moved up a spot into a seventh place finish in the 'A' final.
Rachael Grothe swam in the 'B' final and placed second with a time of 1:00.37.
The last individual event of the evening was the 400 IM where
Lauren Teghtsoonian had a huge swim to finish with the bronze medal. All the way from lane 8, Lauren battled her way to the podium in a time of 4:43.19. Teammate
Julia Ellis-Hale swam in the 'B' final and finished in 12th overall. On the men's side, Tristan Cotè was the top Dino in fourth place, followed by teammate Rob Hill in 7th. In the 'B' final,
Christian Ng dropped a second from his morning swim to finish 10th overall.
The last event of the night was the women's and men's 4x100 freestyle relay. The women's team made up of
Danica Ludlow,
Robyn Lee,
Leah Smal, and
Tianna Rissling placed 5th in 3:46.63. The men's team consisting of Chris Neave,
Teddy Kalp, Ben Blondal, and
Peter Brothers finished in fourth.
It was a great first night of racing for our Dinos and it sets our swimmers up well for the rest of the championship. After the first day, the Dinos women are in fourth place with 111 points, with the men in third with 139 points. Prelims begin again Saturday morning at 8 a.m. MT, with finals following in the afternoon.
