CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team was in Vancouver this past weekend where they took on the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds received Canada West championship medals as they won both games against the Dinos to finish atop the conference standings.
Goals in both games were heavily weighted to the second half, with the exception of Saturday morning when Dinos forward
Jenna Bower scored the first goal just minutes into the match.
Dinos goalkeeper
Madison Arbuckle battled throughout Saturday's second half as she faced a potent attack from the Thunderbirds. UBC's Margaret Pham and Jordyn Faiczak eventually broke through to give their team the lead through field goals, while Sophie Jones scored through a penalty corner shot.
Despite the tough fight the Dinos put up during the match on Sunday, they were dealt a 6-0 defeat to the Thunderbirds. Arbuckle was strong in goal during the first half as she held UBC to just one goal, but the home side would not be denied as they capitalized on their chances in the second half. Meghan Hayden scored two of the five goals during the second half through a field goal and a penalty corner.
Calgary will now play their final games of the season in Victoria.
"We will contribute growth in ball control and work on getting the ball into the attacking zone as part of training to improve overall performance for the rest of the season," said head coach
Peter Taylor.
