VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds celebrated receiving their Canada West championship medals in style with a 6-0 win over the Calgary Dinos at UBC's Wright Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Dinos played a strong first half, with goalie
Madison Arbuckle only beaten once in the 19th minute by T-Bird Emily Martin, despite relentless pressure by the Thunderbirds.
But the floodgates opened for the UBC offence early in the second half. UBC scored five goals in a sixteen-minute span, with Meghan Hayden potting a pair and Sara Goodman, Hannah Eborall and Margaret Pham adding singles.
The 'Birds were lethal off set pieces on the day, with their final three tallies coming off penalty corners.
Rowan Harris provided the clean sheet in the Thunderbird goal.
UBC will now prepare to host the OUA champion in the U SPORTS field hockey championship best-of-three games final on November 3, 4 and 5. The Dinos, meanwhile, will wrap up the 2017 season when they visit the University of Victoria Vikes next weekend.
