CALGARY – Seven members of the University of Calgary Dinos football team are conference all-stars in 2016, Canada West announced Thursday.
Receiver
Austen Hartley and guard
Ryan Sceviour earned the honour on offence, while defensive linemen
Jack McEwen and
Connor McGough joined linebacker
Boston Rowe and defensive backs
Robert Woodson and
Adam Laurensse on the defensive side of the all-star team.
The sixth-ranked Dinos (6-2) host the No. 10 Saskatchewan Huskies (5-3) in a Hardy Cup semifinal Saturday at McMahon Stadium, with the winner advancing to the 80th Hardy Cup. Kickoff goes at noon MT, live on Shaw TV and CanadaWest.tv, and tickets are available now at www.godinos.com/tickets.
Woodson, the 2015 conference defensive MVP, was one of six unanimous selections by the six Canada West coaches. The fourth-year defensive back was a first team All-Canadian in 2016 and had another outstanding year. Along with fellow boundary defensive back Laurensse – already a two-time first team All-Canadian himself – Woosdon led a defensive unit that allowed just 167 points and 395.4 yards per game during the regular season, both conference-best marks. Laurensse added a pair of interceptions to his career total this year.
Boston Rowe, meanwhile, finished third in the conference in tackles with 53.5, adding 1.4 sacks, two interceptions, two pass knockdowns, and two forced fumbles. And on the line,
Jack McEwen led the conference in sacks with 4.5 from his nose tackle position and combined with fellow all-star McGough to help the Dinos post the best run defence in the conference, allowing just 107.4 yards per game.
Offensively,
Austen Hartley makes his first all-star appearance despite missing two games with injury this season. The fourth-year product of Bishop Grandin high school led the conference in receiving yards per game with 110.2, putting up 661 on 45 receptions in six games. Hartley added four TDs, including a big one in the fourth quarter last week against UBC to aid in the Dinos' comeback that led to an overtime win, clinching home field for this weekend's playoff game.
Third-year offensive lineman Sceviour rounds out the septet of Dinos all-stars. The product of Bowness High School was a steadying force for an offensive line that experienced plenty of juggling due to injury throughout the season.
Canada West will announce its major awards next week, ahead of the 80th Hardy Cup championship.
