CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos found five different names contributing to their 6-1 victory over the University of Regina Cougars, Saturday afternoon, Nov. 26th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
"It was a really good start, we've struggled in the past few weekends to get a good start," explained Dinos forward Coda Gordon. "It was nice to get out there and score the first goal."
Continuing the momentum from last nights' double overtime win, the Dinos jumped out to an early lead, just five minutes into the game.
Cain Franson tied up a Cougar as they both battled for the puck, Logan Fisher fished the puck out, cut across the top of the circle and netted his third of the season past Cougars' goaltender Andy Desautels.
Just past the mid-way point of the first, Calgary increased its lead to 2-0 on the power play. Brayden Sherbinin fired a low wrist-shot on net, Dylan Walchuk passed the rebound to Gordon who put away his first of the afternoon.
Gordon found the back of the net again, three minutes later. Walchuk redirected his pass to Gordon who was streaking into Regina's zone. Collecting his own rebound, scoring just over the top of Desautels pad.
"It felt really good, I haven't scored in a while," stated Gordon. "It felt nice to get the monkey off the back."
Calgary wasn't done yet. One minute later, yesterday's overtime winner Danny Gayle notched his fourth of the season, ending Desautels afternoon between the pipes.
"After they changed their goaltending we changed the pace, we went off a little lightly after the first period, had a couple lapses but I thought we were able to regroup and pull it together in the third," said Gordon on the scoreless second period.
Regina tried to beat Dinos goaltender Matt Greenfield but couldn't do so until the third period, three minutes after Sherbinin went bar-down from the point to add another to the Dinos lead.
Cougars' Cody Fowlie would score his teams only goal of the game. Tristen Frei passed the puck out from behind the net for Fowlie to redirect, on the ice past Greenfield.
Dinos Elgin Pearce would add another before the end of the game, as the Dinos took the victory, 6-1.
Regina will return home to host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend, Dec. 2-3, to play a two-game series.
"We have to take this sweep and look where we are in the standings," explained Gordon on the upcoming weekend. "It's huge to finish off on a strong note, so it's a big weekend coming up for us."
The Dinos will head to Vancouver to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds next weekend, Dec. 2-3, in a two-game series.
