VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos ran into a hot goaltender Friday night, dropping the first of their weekend series 2-1 to the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.

The Thunderbirds (5-9-1) scored twice in the third period while getting a tremendous performance in goal from Derek Dun to earn the 2-1 win over the visiting Dinos (9-5-1).
 
Dun was no short of brilliant making 32 saves for his third win of the season while his team worked hard in all three zones in front of him.
 
Neither team could find the back of the net through 40 minutes as Steven Stanford stopped 16 shots through two periods and made 23 saves overall.
 
The Thunderbirds finally broke open the deadlock 4:12 into the final period when Chase Clayton finished on a 2-on-1 rush with Austin Vetterl for his fourth of the season. Raymond Grewal picked up the second assist.
 
The T-Birds continued to hold off the Dinos' counter-attack but Calgary earned their fourth power play of the game with just over two minutes remaining when Wes Vannieuwenhuizen was called for interference. Less than a minute later, Luke Lockhart was sent to the box for closing his hand on the puck while trying to bat it out of the UBC zone putting the Thunderbirds down two men with 1:38 remaining.
 
The Dinos then pulled Stanford to make it a 6-on-3 advantage, but Devan Fafard grabbed the puck from the wall in his own end and fired it into the empty net for his first Canada West goal, which ended up being the game winner. 
 
After the ensuing faceoff, the Dinos once again pulled Stanford to continue the 6-on-3 advantage eventually beating Dun on a deflected shot with 23 seconds left in the period. Adam Kambeitz was credited with his first of the season. Cain Franson, whose point shot was tipped in, got the first assist, and Chris Collins got the other.
 
Calgary remained on the power play but the Thunderbirds were able to eat the puck along the boards until the final buzzer.
 
The Thunderbirds finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while killing four of five Calgary chances.
 
The win improves the 'Birds to 4-2-1 on home ice while ending a four-game losing streak in fine fashion.
 
The T-Birds and Dinos battle again Saturday for the final time in the regular season. Puck drop at Father David Bauer Arena is set for 5 p.m. MT, live on CanadaWest.tv.
