CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos will look to clinch home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs as they play host to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Seniors' Day Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.
The Dinos, current conference recordholders with eight consecutive seasons with a home playoff game, will look to extend that streak to nine and maintain their hold on first place in Canada West this week. Calgary moved up one spot in the U Sports Top 10 rankings this week, thanks to Regina's loss at Alberta, and can clinch first place with two wins in the final two weeks.
The Huskies, meanwhile, need two wins in two weeks to guarantee a spot in the postseason, and they'll be looking for revenge for the Dinos' 20-19 squeaker at Griffiths Stadium on Sept. 16 when Calgary drove the length of the field for the game-winning
Niko DiFonte field goal.
The Dinos will celebrate their graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony Saturday.
GAME NOTES (.pdf)
HEADLINES
- Second of two meetings between the rivals this year, with Calgary taking the first 20-19 Sept 16
- The Dinos are riding a nine-game regular season win streak over the Huskies, dating back to the 2010 season
- Calgary defeated Saskatchewan in their Canada West semi-final meeting last year by a 37-29 score
- The Dinos are the only team to have clinched a playoff spot heading into the weekend, while the Huskies still control their own destiny. Two Saskatchewan wins will clinch a postseason berth for the Huskies, while the Dinos would clinch home field with a win Saturday
- Saskatchewan receiver Mitch Hillis (once) and Calgary defensive lineman (defence) Jack McEwen are reigning Canada West players of the week after their teams' wins last weekend
No. 4 Calgary Dinos (5-1)
Last week: defeated Manitoba 63-6
Next week: at UBC
- Prior to the game, the Dinos will recognize five graduating fifth-year seniors – QB Jimmy Underdahl, DB Hunter Turnbull, FB Anthony Anderson, RB Bryce Harper, LB Deondre Townsend – along with several fourth-year players who will not be returning to the lineup
- Underdahl, who went down awkwardly in the third quarter against Manitoba, remains day-to-day and is questionable for Saturday's game. Backup Adam Sinagra looked solid in relief of Underdahl last week, throwing for a pair of touchdowns
- It's the third straight home game for the Dinos, who have scored at least 50 points in both previous outings against Alberta and Manitoba.
- Through six games, the Dinos own both the most potent offence (218 points, 3193 yards) and stingiest defence (94 points, 2156 yards) in the conference
- The Dinos welcomed back two key receivers to the lineup last week in Austen Hartley and Michael Klukas. Hartley leads the conference with 127.3 yards per game, and both scored TDs against Manitoba
- The Dinos will wrap up the regular season with a trip to UBC to face the Thunderbirds next Saturday before beginning the playoffs Nov. 5.
Saskatchewan Huskies (3-3)
Last week: defeated UBC 40-10
Next week: host Alberta
- Saskatchewan holds its own playoff fate in the final two games of the regular season: a pair of wins clinches a playoff spot, while any other result would require help from other teams for the Huskies to make the playoffs.
- Running back Tyler Chow is the conference leader in rushing yards with 665 on the season, despite seeing limited action last week
- The 40-10 win over the defending Vanier Cup champions snapped a three-game losing skid for the Huskies, a series that began with their 20-19 loss to Calgary
- The Huskies and Dinos are tied for the conference lead with 10 sacks apiece
- Saskatchewan's kicking game is a strength, holding both the longest punt average as well as the most field goal accuracy in the conference
- The Huskies are second only to the Dinos in points allowed at 161, 14 fewer than their offence has scored (175) over the course of the season
- Saskatchewan wraps up the regular season next week at home against the Alberta Golden Bears.
