CALGARY - The UBC Thunderbirds defeat the Calgary Dinos 5-0 on a chilly day at Hawkings Field on Saturday.
Fourth-year Meghan Hayden of the Thunderbirds opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 14
th minute of the match.
Just minutes after, Thunderbirds put in another goal and again from a penalty corner opportunity on the 17
th minute, leading the score with 2-0.
Despite the numerous of saves made from goalkeeper
Ingrid Ulrich of the Calgary Dinos, she was unable to stop the third goal from going in on time. As she dove to the left side of the net making a save from a corner shot, the ball rebounded towards Margaret Pham of UBC and without hesitation Pham put in a hard shot into the right side of the net, setting the score at 3-0 for half-time.
Into the second half, the Dinos came out much stronger applying pressure on the Thunderbirds but they were still unable to maintain much possession.
On the 53
rd minute, Pham scores another goal, making it her second one of the game and also bringing the lead to 4-0.
Seconds later, the fifth shot was made by Stephanie Norlander, finalizing the game at 5-0.
Even though the results left head coach
Peter Taylor frustrated, he still carried positive feedback for the team.
"I thought we played much better than last week which is still frustrating in a way. But I was still happy with the improvements and the fight that the girls had today. We defended well and our intensity was very good and we put pressure on the ball and played more as a team."
Though Taylor knows it won't be easy, he still has confidence that they can bring out a better performance for tomorrow's game.
Both teams will verse each other again on Sunday at 11 a.m. where the Dinos will sport their 50
th Anniversary gold jerseys.
