BOX SCORE CALGARY - The Calgary Dinos have kept their undefeated season in tact after taking a 3-0 victory against the Regina Cougars in their third game of the season.
But their 3 and 0 season isn't the only streak the Dinos have maintained; they remain undefeated at home since 2013.
"I'm happy we're getting results [and] I think like anybody else we're a working progress," said head coach
Troye Flannery, adding he thinks the first half started off poorly but they worked themselves out going into the second.
"We decided to compete. We started to get on the ball a little bit more and connect the passes."
The first goal came late in the first off the foot of Dinos' #19
Dominica Wronski, who only came into the game in the 33rd minute after subbing in for
Maddison Fritze. A clear shot from the left side of the top of the 18, with the assist from
Jordan Smith, gave Wronski her first goal of the season and put the Dinos in the lead.
"We came around again as a team," Wronski said about the shift in play after the first goal.
"The confidence changes; the team starts playing on the ground a bit more and not as panicky."
Cougars' Kayla McDonald saw a yellow card in the 51st minute for a tackle from behind on Smith.
Maddie Lee would take the penalty kick for the Dinos, but goalkeeper Savannah Williams would save it in the bottom corner, keeping the game a 1-0 deficit.
But it wouldn't be long before the lead would be extended 2-0 with a header off of Dinos' #24 Molly Ramsay, her third of the season, in the 61st minute. The assist came from teammate Wronski with the corner kick.
The Dinos dominated the second half, keeping the Cougars in their own end and pulling corner kick after corner kick.
Another yellow would be seen in the 71st minute, this time against the Dinos. Regina's #7 Brianna Wright would take the kick, but keeper
Samantha Chang-Foidl would make the save.
The third and final goal of the game came in the 80th minute off the cleat of Fritz from inside the six yard box. A quick kick from the right got the ball to the far left post, over the shoulder of Williams and Wronski added another assist to her resume.
"It's definitely nice to come out on top," said Wronski. "We started to pressure them, they started to give the ball away and we capitalized on their mistakes."
The victory keeps Calgary second in Canada West and 10th place in the Canadian Interuniversity Standings, a great position early in the season.
Flannery said he is happy to be in the top rankings, but says there is still lots of soccer left to be played.
The Dinos take on the Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday, September 20 at noon in their fourth game of the season. The Canada West matchup takes place on the West Varsity Pitch.
"We just have to reset and hopefully come out with another [win]," said Wronski
