Dinos men's track and field crowned Canada West champions

WINNIPEG – The University of Calgary Dinos men's track and field team was earned its first Canada West title since 2012 Saturday after a fantastic performance at the conference championships in Winnipeg.

Three more championship records were set on day 2 of the 2015 Canada West track and field championship, after three records established on day 1, at the fast facility at the James Daly Fieldhouse at the Max Bell Centre at the University of Manitoba. In the team standings, Trinity Western Spartans defend their women's team title as they cruised to 39 point win over second place Calgary as they reached the century mark with 100 points scored. On the men's side Calgary earned the first men's title since 2012 when they registered 84 points and were ahead of second place and host Manitoba with 70.

All athletes meeting the CIS standard plus the top two finishers at the conference championship will advance to the 2015 CIS T&F championships, which will be held March 12-14 and will be hosted by the University of Windsor.

On the men's events, Calgary surged to the title on the strength of two more individual wins plus sweeping both relay events while steadily producing points in all events on the final day. Head coach Doug Lamont was named the Canada West men's Coach of the Year. 

Garrett King of Calgary bounced back from a tough 300m race on day one and had an incredible last lap kick to capture the 600m title in a time of 1:19.99. Later in the day, the Dinos had another gold when Roman Justinen won the 1500m after nipping the line in first in a time of 3:54.59. In 4x200m relay, Calgary captured the title in a tight three way race and won in a time of 1:27.70. The Dinos swept the men relays on day two when they were also first in the 4x400m with a time of 3:16.80.

The reigning CIS rookie of the Year Aaron Hernandez of Lethbridge won his second consecutive Canada West championship triple jump title with a leap of 15.50m. Also with Lethbridge, Peter Millman, last year's  Male Field Athlete of the Year award recipient, was a double gold medallist at this year's championship after another first in the shot put with a throw of 17.23m along with his first in the weight toss on day one.

In the men's 60m, Tevaughn Campbell won a competitive final with a finish of 6.82 to EARN [Click and drag to move]  his second conference title (2012) in this event. The Alberta duo-athlete, played football in the fall, and second year pole vaulter Nathan Filipek won a hotly contested event with a vault of 4.93m.

To end the two day event, Manitoba Bisons second year high jumper Alhaji Mansaray gave the home crowd a reason to cheer loudly as he leapt to a new championship record with a high jump mark of 2.17 (old record was set last year by Regina's Jeremy Eckert at 2.16).

The Dinos women's team added three bronze medals to their team collection. Jamie Kolodinsky earned third place in the high jump, Allison Kendall took the bronze in the triple jump and Samantha Groenveld added a third place finish in the weight throw. Niki Oudenaarden earned the title of Canada West Field Athlete of the Year for her gold in the pentathlon and silver in the shot put on Day 1 of the Championships. 

Trinity had three individual gold medal performances and another relay gold to dominate the second day of competition. In the high jump, a familiar name was at the top of as Trinity Western's Emma Nuttall became a three-time conference champion in this event with a jump of 1.73m. Also with the Spartans, last year's triple medalist and Outstanding Female Field Performer Sabrina Nettey won the triple jump, and was part of 1-2 finish with teammate Claudette Allen, with a leap of 12.20m and this was her second medal of this year's meet after a third in the long jump on day one.

Later in the day, Sarah Inglis broke the 1500m championship record with a time of 4:16.84 – smashing a 34 year old record set in 1981 conference championship by Debbie Scott of Victoria in a time of 4:19.96. Inglis is now a two-time winner at the conference level in this event and also won silver in 100m on day one of this year's event. Trinity went 1-2-3 in the 1500m.

Third year Alberta sprinter Leah Walkeden blazed to a new conference championship record in the women's 60m with a time of 7.47, besting the old mark of 7.51 set by Amonn Nelson of Calgary in 2011 on the same track.

In the women's 600m, fourth year Rachel Francois from Victoria finished first for the second time at this Championship when she finished two seconds ahead of second place in a time of 1:30.17. Francois also won the 1000m on day one. In the weight throw, Saskatchewan's Olena Olenick won with a toss of 17.37m.

In the 4x200m relay final, Alberta won a tight race with a time of 1:39.40 while Trinity salted away the team title with a gold in the last track event of the championship with a first in the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:49.42.

Track and Field Notes: Over the two day event, six conference championship track and field records were established as women and men competed in 17 events apiece. On day one, Victoria in the women's 4x800m relay and men's 4x800m relay plus Victoria's Thomas Riva in the men's 1000m while on day two, Leah Walkeden of Regina in the women's 60m, Sarah Inglis of Trinity Western in the women's 1500m and Manitoba's Alhaji Mansaray in the men's high jump.
