Doyle sweeps breaststroke, named CIS Swimmer of the Year

VICTORIA – Fiona Doyle wrapped up her CIS career in style Saturday, sweeping the breaststroke events and earning CIS Swimmer of the Year honours as the 2015 CIS Swimming Championships wrapped up at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool.

Doyle, the fifth-year breaststroke specialist from Limerick, Ireland, set a CIS record in the preliminaries with her time of 30.70 in the 50-metre breaststroke Saturday morning, then swam a long-course time of 31.11 to edge out teammate Tianna Rissling for the gold medal in the final. The 50-metre win gave Doyle a sweep of the three breaststroke events and, thanks to the quality of her swims, earned her the CIS female swimmer of the year honour.

Doyle added a bronze medal in the medley relay with her team of Chelsea Shaul, Rachael Grothe, and Amanda Reason to give the Dinos three medals on the final day of the event.

Teammate Bogdan Knezevic, recently named a Rhodes Scholar, was honoured Saturday with the CIS Student-Athlete Community Service award.

UBC was crowned national champions in both men's and women's swimming. The Dinos men finished in third place behind UBC and Toronto, while the lady Dinos finished with 287 points and a fourth-place finish in the team standings behind UBC, Montreal, and Toronto.
