October opens with Huskies home-and-home

| By:
CALGARY – After separating themselves from the chaos below them in the standings with another dominant win last weekend, the top-ranked Dinos football team will look to head into the bye week with a perfect record when they face the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

The game is part of the Dinos' Play in Pink initiative, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. A portion of all ticket sales will be donated to the CBCF, and pink Dinos merchandise will be available on the concourse at Dinos home games, in all sports, between Oct. 1 and 10.

GAME NOTES (.pdf)

It's the front end of a home-and-home series between the two teams, thanks to a quirk in the Canada West schedule this year that sees all six teams play the same opponent back-to-back with the Thanksgiving bye sandwiched in between. They will renew acquaintances on Friday, Oct. 16 at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

While the Dinos have stayed above the fray with their 4-0 record, the No. 8 Huskies are part of a four-way tie for second place at 2-2 and are the only team that has yet to face the Dinos, who held on to their No. 1 national ranking for the third consecutive week. The next two games will go a long way to determining final playoff positioning, and Calgary-Saskatchewan battles are always intense.

HEADLINES
•    First of two back-to-back meetings between the Dinos and Huskies. The teams will play in Saskatoon after the bye on Friday, Oct. 16
•    It's the first Saskatchewan visit to McMahon Stadium in more than two years, the last one a 36-24 Calgary win on Sept. 14, 2013
•    Calgary has won the last six in a row against the Huskies, with their last loss coming in 2010
•    The game features the top two teams in the conference in terms of point differential: Calgary (+167) and Saskatchewan (+13)
•    Saskatchewan's last win at McMahon Stadium was on opening week in 2010, when they defeated Calgary 34-13. The Dinos, at the time, were ranked No. 1 in the nation
•    The game is one of just two top-10 match-ups in the country this week. The other has No. 4 Montreal visiting No. 9 Sherbrooke, also on Saturday afternoon.

No. 1 CALGARY DINOS (4-0)
Last week: defeated Regina 72-8
After bye: at Saskatchewan

•    Scoring 152 points and putting up 1,700 yards of offence over their last two games, the Dinos are riding an offensive hot streak that started in the fourth quarter comeback against Manitoba in Week 2. Beginning with their 20 points in that fourth frame, Calgary has managed more than 19 points per quarter since
•    Without tailback Mercer Timmis, the Dinos still managed 72 points and 727 yards of offence in a big win at Regina last week
•    Andrew Buckley has won back-to-back CIS offensive player-of-the-week honours, the most recent after putting up 478 passing yards and four TDs against Regina. With nearly 1,500 passing yards through three games, he is on pace to break Greg Vavra's single-season school and conference passing record set in 1983
•    The Dinos' defence has been continually improving as well, allowing less than 300 yards last week against Regina and holding starting QB Noah Picton to just 80 passing yards
•    The Dinos' 152-point total in the last two weeks is better than the season-long total of 19 of the 27 CIS football teams.
•    The Dinos are ranked No. 1 for the third straight week, the first time in more than 25 years that they've held on to the pole position for that long. Calgary received 28 of a possible 30 first place votes in the national media poll this week.

No. 8 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (2-2)
Last week: defeated UBC 45-29
After bye: host Calgary

•    After dropping their first two games of the season to Manitoba and Alberta, the Huskies have rebounded to record wins at home against Regina and a key road win at UBC last week
•    Led offensively by veteran quarterback Drew Burko, who is averaging better than 300 yards per game and has six passing TDs
•    Veteran Mitch Hillis is their top receiver with 34 catches – more than twice the number of the second-place Huskie on the leaderboard, Julan Lynch (16)
•    The Huskies' run offence is third-best in the conference, putting up 172.3 yards per game. They'll face Calgary's Canada West-best run defence (132.3 yards/game)
•    Senior linebacker Dane Bishop leads the way with 25.5 tackles, while former conference lineman of the year Donovan Dale, a UBC transfer, has a conference-best five sacks
•    Saskatchewan is the most disciplined team in Canada West with just 39 penalties on the year
