CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos allowed only one goal in their loss to the Victoria Vikes, Sept. 14 on Hawkings Field.
One goal was all that was needed for today's three points and it was credited to Alexis Veljacic in the seventh minute of play. The Coquitlam, B.C. native is the only fifth year on the team and the penalty-corner finish is the first goal for the senior defender in all five seasons playing with the Vikes. The visiting Vikes had upward of 15 penalty corner opportunities that were squandered away by the Dinos goalkeeping of
Alicia Frisch. The Dinos packed the circle making the congested space difficult for the Vikes to create chances. Regardless, the Vikes were unable to capitalize on their penalty corners leaving Veljacic's goal the game winner.
Despite another shut out, the Dinos improvement from their 6-0 loss yesterday was apparent. Head coach Henre Meyer believed a number of factors played into the results on the scoresheet today.
"It was another fast-paced game from Victoria today, but our girls were really gritty today. It was nice to see that there were some tweaks at positioning, a little bit of confidence, and lack of first game jitters as well. We still had to battle in our end at the back, but once we started seeing some key angles and stepping in front of their midfield, there were some opportunites. We are also starting to create a bit more space for ourselves and stretching the field."
Some key players that made the difference today were hard for Meyer to point out, noting that it was an all around team effort in the improvement from Saturday to Sunday.
"Alicia was fantastic in goal again and she made some fantastic saves, but I think today we played really well all around and it's hard to single out some stand outs from the game today. The defence obviously gets a little more work, but the forwards did a great job today getting into key areas and it was a great team effort today."
The Dinos have two weeks off until their next double-header which goes down against the UBC Thunderbirds. The homestand will continue Sept. 27-28 with both games starting at 1pm. Meyer's takeaways from the opening weekend of the season will hopefully translate in two weeks.
"We still have to work on some basics and positioning. I think it comes down to cycling in and out of key positions, but it's also about our girls have self belief. From there, I think they will be good to go. I'm really excited for the progress in two weeks from now."
