BOX SCORE REGINA – A late run in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the University of Calgary took a 77-66 road victory over Regina on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars were within two heading into the fourth quarter, but Calgary reeled off seven straight points capped by a
Matt Letkeman layup on a fast break with under five minutes left to go up nine. The Cougars chipped the lead down to three with a minute and a half left, but a massive dunk as part of a three-point play by
Josh Turner (see video) gave all the momentum to Calgary and the Dinos sealed the win with four free throws in the final minute.
Calgary (6-13) shot a ridiculous 96% from the free throw line, hitting 24 of its 25 attempts in the victory.
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson led all players with 21 points, while Turner ended up 12-for-12 from the free throw line and with 16 points.
Philip Barndt added 14 points and nine rebounds in the win, while
Matt Letkeman scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Darius Mole was 3-for-4 from three-point range and led the Cougars (3-16) with 12 points. Travis Sylvestre and Jeremy Zver both added nine points for the U of R in the loss.
The game started oddly, as Calgary scored the first 13 points of the game only to have the Cougars reply with a 15-0 run of their own – capped by a three-point play by Matthew Augustine – to take what would turn out to be the U of R's only lead of the game. Calgary immediately responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead back, and the Dinos held a single-digit lead for the duration of the contest until free throws by Ogungbemi-Jackson pushed the advantage to 11 with 10 seconds remaining.
Calgary and Regina will finish off their two-game set on Saturday at the CKHS.
