Dinos get badly-needed win in Winnipeg

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG – The University of Calgary Dinos picked up a weekend split against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen following a dramatic 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13) victory Saturday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Calgary jumps ahead of Winnipeg in the Canada West Men's Volleyball standings with a record of 10-10. Winnipeg with the loss falls back to 9-11.

Greg Mann led the Dinos in kills with 20, while adding 12 defensive digs and four blocks. Sean Tuff finished with 15 kills and Connor Frehlich added 14 kills. Darcee Froese led Calgary in digs with 13.

Winnipeg was led by Casey Schouten's match high 21 kills. He also led the Wesmen with four blocks and two service aces.  Tom Douglas-Powell added 19 kills and Matthew Schriemer finished with 14. Setter Josh McKay had 54 assists and a match high 23 digs.

The Wesmen had things going their way in the first set jumping out to a 11-5 lead in the early stages. Calgary got back into the set going on a 11-4 run to take a 16-15 lead into the technical timeout. Winnipeg continued to trail by one late at 23-22 until back to back kills by Ivan Kartev and Greg Mann gave the Dinos the first 25-22.

Winnipeg was able to regroup in the second set and managed to grab a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. The teams battled throughout the set and after a kill by Connor Frehlich made the score 25-25 a kill by Douglas-Powell followed by a Dinos attacking error helped the Wesmen win the second frame 27-25.

In the third set both teams battled once again with neither team holding a lead of more than three points. That changed with Winnipeg up 22-21, the Wesmen scored three straight points to close out the set by a score of 25-21.

Calgary came back in the fourth set winning  by a margin of 25-21 to force a fifth and deciding set.

The visiting Dinos completed the comeback winning the fifth set by a score of 15-13.

Calgary will be home to Brandon next weekend. Winnipeg will close out the regular season with two big matches in Langley, BC against Trinity Western.
