Dinos deliver in overtime

BOX SCORE

VANCOUVER - Iya Gavrilova, the Canada West's leading scorer, potted the winner in overtime to lead the Calgary Dinos to a 4-3 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Gavrilova scored her league leading 14th goal of the season, 3:06 into overtime, beating Katie Greenway who saw her first action of the season. Gavrilova finished the game with a goal and an assist.

With the win Calgary and UBC are both tied with a record of 8-3-4 and 27 points. They are two points behind Manitoba and Saskatchewan, one point up on Alberta and just two points up on Regina in the heavily contested Canada West.

"We got a little too comfortable," said UBC head coach Graham Thomas. "We weren't in the right mindset going into the last period. You've got to play the full 60 minutes of tough hockey and we just didn't quite pull that off tonight."

Jenna Smith opened the scoring 1:34 into the game beating Samantha Langford who got the start for UBC. The visitors made it 2-0 less than 10 minutes later as Jessyka Holt and Gavrilova fed Janelle Parent who jammed the puck in from right in front of the net. It was Parent's sixth goal of the season. Greenway, a transfer from St. Francis Xavier, where she played four seasons, then came in to spell off Langford.

Desperate to answer, the Thunderbirds got onto the scoreboard with 5:17 left in the first period. Nicole Saxvik converted a sharp pass from Kelly Murray, scoring her sixth goal of the season and cutting the lead to 2-1 through 20 minutes of play.

The second period held more action in store for UBC. They took advantage of a power play to score the equalizer 8:10 in. Katie Zinn beat Dinos goalie Hayley Dowling from in close after teammates Sarah Carsorso and Saxvik did the grunt work along the boards to work the puck up to her.

Buoyed by their momentum, the Thunderbirds struck again with only one minute remaining in the second period.Kathleen Cahoon stole the puck and skated in to score the unassisted go ahead goal for her team. 3-2 is how things stood after 40 minutes.

With just under six minutes remaining in regulation the Dinos would score the equalizer. Smith potted her second goal of the night to tie the game at 3-3, coverting a cross ice feed from Stephanie Zvonkovic, and sending the game to extra time.

Parent led all scorers with three points (1g, 2a), while Hayley Wickenheiser added three assists. Dowling got the win in net for the Dinos making 24 saves. Greenway suffered the loss in relief, stopping 11 of 13 shots she faced.

UBC went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Calgary was 0-for-1.

These two will renew their rivalry tomorrow afternoon at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Puck drop is 2 p.m. in the final game for both teams before the holiday break.
