Wesmen upend Dinos in weekend opener

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 3-1 (25-14, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23) in a pivotal Canada West men's volleyball match Friday evening in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen (9-10) pull even with both the Calgary Dinos and the Brandon Bobcats in a battle for the final playoff spot in the Canada West men's volleyball standings.

Winnipeg was led by the trio of Tom Douglas-Powell, Casey Schouten and Matthew Schriemer. Douglas-Powell had a match high 16 kills followed by Schouten with 14 and Schriemer with 10. Schriemer led the team with 10 defensive digs. Douglas-Powell had three service aces. Matthew Stubler led the team in total blocks with five.

Andrew Visser, Connor Frehlich and Greg Mann each had 11 kills for the Dinos. Jackson Maris had a team high eight defensive digs. Ivan Kartev led the team with four blocks.

The hometown Wesmen came out on fire in the opening set leading 16-8 at the technical timeout. Douglas-Powell's strong serving was evident early on serving up a pair of aces in the early stages. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-14. The Wesmen had a hitting percentage of .650 and had zero attacking errors in the set.

Winnipeg continued their impressive play in the second set leading 16-10 at the technical and eventually closing out the set by a margin of 25-17. Winnipeg took advantage of seven Dinos errors in the set, while committing only a pair of attacking errors.

The two opened the third set exchanging points in a back and forth affair. Calgary went into the break leading 16-14. Winnipeg continued to trail by a pair 22-20 down the stretch until the Dinos scored three straight points to win the third set 25-20.

In the fourth set Winnipeg carried the play early on leading 16-12 at the technical break. The Dinos did not quit and made a late run to close the gap to 22-21. Winnipeg was successful soon after closing out the set by a score of 25-23.

Winnipeg and Calgary will close out their weekend series on Saturday night in the early match starting at 5 p.m. MT, live on CanadaWest.tv.
