Wood picks up four golds, Dinos finish 2nd

| By:
CALGARY – Russell Wood swam a tough triple to wrap up the 2014 Canada West swimming championships Sunday afternoon, extending his total to four individual gold medals while his men's and women's teammates finished second in the overall team standings.

The sophomore swam three major races in less than an hour. Wood picked up his third gold medal of the meet in the 200 IM, then grabbed a fourth just minutes later in the 100-metre backstroke to sweep the three distances in that discipline. Minutes after that, he swam the opening leg for the Dinos in the 4 x 100-metre medley relay, where Calgary finished second. Wood set one of the five Canada West records to fall in the meet, breaking his own mark in the 200-metre backstroke on Saturday.

"Russell swam well all weekend, and that was a big triple for him," said Dinos head coach Mike Blondal. "It's pretty tough swimming tonight, and especially with the altitude in Calgary, that's really good swimming."

Domination by UBC continued to be the story Sunday as the Thunderbirds were crowned conference champions as the 2014 Canada West swimming championships wrapped up at the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre.

Led by swimmer of the year Savannah King, the Thunderbird women ran away with the competition, setting a conference record with 1,017 points, finishing nearly 500 points ahead of second-place Calgary (574) in the team race. Alberta came in third with 473.5 points, followed by Lethbridge (294.5), Victoria (272.5), Manitoba (176), and Regina (102.5).

The men's race was far closer, but it was still a comfortable lead for UBC led by male swimmer of the year Coleman Allen. The Thunderbirds captured 941 points, nearly 200 better than second-place Calgary's 755 points. Alberta's 404 was good enough for third as they edged Victoria (398) by just six points, while Lethbridge (310), Manitoba (173), and Regina (133) rounded out the men's standings.

FULL RESULTS

With Wood's two podium-top finishes leading the way, the Dinos picked up an additional 14 medals on the final day of competition in their home pool. Calgary picked up silver medals in both the men's and women's 4 x 100-metre medley relays, while Thomas Jobin (200 butterfly) and David Woodman (100 freestyle) also picked up silver medals. Tristan Cote joined Wood on the podium in the 200 IM with a bronze medal win, while Fiona Doyle and Tianna Rissling won silver and bronze, respectively, in the women's 200-metre breaststroke. Lindsay Delmar and Talia Benson along withCote and Woodman pulled the same two-three finishes in the women's and men's 400-metre freestyle events, and a bronze from Bogdan Knezevic in the 200 breaststroke rounded out the Dinos' medal haul.

"David Woodman stood out, Bogdan stood out pretty well, and Thomas Jobin improved significantly from last year's performance," said Blondal of his team's highlights from the weekend. "Some of our rookies didn't step up in the heats the way we had hoped, so we might have come into the meet having worked a little too hard. But I thought the men's 4 x 200 freestyle relay setting a new record on Friday night shows we have decent depth, but we're going to be up against two pretty strong teams in UBC and Toronto when we get to CIS."

"On the women's side, Fiona Doyle and Lindsay Delmar both swam very well. We're going to be challenged there with only nine qualifiers for CIS on the women's side, and we're going to have to show some good individual swims in Toronto."

Brad Crocker of the Dinos was named the male student-athlete community service award winner. A second-year kinesiology student, Crocker volunteers at the Rehab Fitness Centre. He works with people that have mobility restrictions and aids in developing rehab fitness programs to encourage physical activity and promote goals for recovery.  Outside of the pool, Crocker volunteers his time at the Colonel Belcher's Senior Residence.

The Dinos now regroup and get set for the 2014 CIS Swimming Championships, hosted by the University of Toronto Feb. 20-22.
