BOX SCORE CALGARY – Once again, it took five sets to determine a winner as the University of Calgary Dinos hosted the Saskatchewan Huskies. The visitors won 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-15, 27-25, 15-10) in a marathon match on Jan. 25 at Jack Simpson Gym.
Rookie Janna Ogle once again led the way for the Dinos with a game-high 22 kills and 11 digs. Rookie Brianna Solberg had arguably her best game of the season, recording 12 kills and a game-high 17 digs. Ali Woolley also hit double digits in both categories with 13 kills and 11 digs.
For the Huskies, Emily Humbert scored 17 kills in the match, followed by Emmalyn Copping added 16 more. Candace Hueser had 10 kills and 14 digs while Kayla Tycholiz added 11. Setter Jina Barker recorded a game-high 52 assists.
The Dinos got off to a great start in the first with Ogle picking up an outstanding five of Calgary's seven points early on. It was the Dinos that headed into the technical timeout up 16-14, capitalizing on Saskatchewan's lack lustre offence.
Calgary was able to maintain that lead and more with the Huskies unable to get things going and close the gap. The Dinos went on to win it 25-21.
In the second, the set was all tied up at seven before the Dinos began to pull away with Solberg serving. Saskatchewan's timeout following an ace didn't provide the spark they needed and Calgary headed into the technical up 16-13.
It was after that break that the Huskies attempted, and were almost successful, at closing the gap. They finally tied the score up at 20 thanks to a couple of hitting errors from the Dinos. It was Ogle that pulled the Dinos out of the tie and gained some points as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 win.
The third set was when the Huskies came up determined to change their fate. With their game firing on all cylinders, the Dinos were held helpless, allowing serves to drop and the Huskies to take a 11-5 lead. Subbed in was Kyjsa Brkich for setter Jordhynn Guy, but nothing helped as Saskatchewan rolled on to a 25-15 win.
In another do-or-die set for the Huskies, they allowed the Dinos to gain a 10-6 lead with Ogle and Solberg getting it done at the net. The lead wouldn't last long for the Dinos though as the score was tied up at 10 after a Saskatchewan timeout and remained tied at 15.
After the technical in which the Huskies led by one, both team battled it out, with neither one gaining more than a one point lead as the set continued. Tied at 24, the Huskies earned some much needed points using the Dinos' block. They won the set in extra points at 27-25 on a kill from Humbert.
The fifth set saw both teams tied up at five, with both sides looking afraid to make a mistake. It was the Huskies that went on a 3-0 run to go up 8-5 at the switch. Calgary found a way to close up the lead at 9-8 with Guy serving at the line, but after a timeout, the Huskies offence became unstoppable. The Dinos had trouble in the back court nearing the end of the set, and Saskatchewan went on to get revenge and win their own five-set match of the weekend by a score of 15-10.
The Dinos drop to 5-13 while the Huskies improve to 8-10.
The Dinos head to Winnipeg next weekend to take on the Wesmen in their final road trip of the 2013-14 regular season. The Huskies will host the UBC Thunderbirds.
