BOX SCORE EDMONTON - In true Battle of Alberta form, the No.3 University of Alberta Golden Bears and University of Calgary Dinos dueled back and forth into an extended fifth and final set, victoriously going the way of the Dinos (21-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-22, 23-21), Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.
Third-year left side Ryley Barnes spun a game-high 21 kills and six aces to go with 10 digs. Senior left side Jay Olmstead put up 19 kills and 10 digs while third-year right side Kevin Proudfoot cracked the double-digit barrier with 10. Veteran setter Jarron Mueller added 37 assists.
Senior outside hitter
Greg Mann netted 20 kills for Calgary alongside 11 digs while another fifth-year outside hitter
Andrew Visser had 11 kills and third-year setter
Jackson Maris earned a game-high 46 assists.
The Dinos improve to 9-7 on the season to maintain a respectable playoff position in the Canada West standings. With the loss, Alberta drops to 11-5, putting them in a tie for second place.
The two squads continued where they left off on Friday night, tending to go point-for-point on the scoreboard and if one team achieved a short run, then their opponent would counter with their own. Rookie outside hitter
Keith West put up two kills late to bring the Dinos to within three of the Bears late in the opening set but where he sent a kill off third-year libero Brendan Yao and into the crowd, third-year outside hitter
Connor Frehlich's attempt went through Yao's arms and out for the 1-0 set lead for the home team.
Yet the Dinos knotted things up at one after two sets with a monstrous performance on defence, Calgary earning two solo blocks and 13 block assists, having Alberta also second-guess their attacks and committing 11 attack errors, including four straight to end the second set.
The Bears came out strong in the third set, however, netting an 9-1 run to push the score to 11-4 for the CIS-ranked team. Momentum wavered midway through the set but Barnes spun three straight aces as part of a late 6-0 run before Dino service errors ended the set and had Alberta a step closer to victory.
Their provincial rivals had something to say about that, making the fourth set the start of a grueling two-set battle where neither team could find a definitive edge on the scoreboard. At the forefront was Barnes leading all players with seven kills in the set but Mann led the Dinos with five of his own, helping Calgary grab the lead at 20-19 and a team effort brought the Dinos even on sets.
The back-and-forth tilt furthered into the final set before Alberta made four straight errors to put Calgary up 8-5 at the technical timeout. Olmstead responded with three kills in the next four points and a 6-2 run tied the game up at 11.
From then on, both teams had the hammer several times but couldn't close out the game until Mueller put his serve just outside the Calgary sideline to give the Dinos a 22-21 lead before Visser and fourth-year middle
Ivan Kartev blocked a John Goranson kill into the Alberta court for the upset win.
Alberta heads out on the road next weekend for a two-game series against the UBC Okanagan Heat while Calgary returns home to face the Saskatchewan Huskies.
