CALGARY – Three goals in each half propelled the University of Victoria Vikes to a 6-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
Victoria gave up almost nothing as they kept the ball in front for most of the game, limiting Calgary's opportunities in their home opener.
"Today we started relatively well, unfortunately we got our heads down and fell apart a little bit," said Dinos head coach Henré Meyer. "Compared to last week, we had a lot more space, a lot more opportunities and were making much more passes. There are a lot of positives moving forward."
The Vikes opened the scoring 15 minutes in when Amanda Kurianowicz capitalized. Victoria added two more before the break, coming on field goals by Mei Lin Cheung and Marin Davidson. Two penalty corners by Kyla Kirby and Andrea Jones widened the visitors' lead to 5-0 before Kirby rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the game in the 60th minute.
It's a third straight setback for the Dinos to open the year, after falling short on the road last weekend against the UBC Thunderbirds. Today was the Vikes' first game of the season as they start out on a winning note.
Calgary and Victoria wrap up this weekend's action tomorrow at 1 p.m. back at Hawkings Field.
The Dinos will have a week off before hosting the Thunderbirds on Oct. 5-6. Next week the Vikes take on UBC in a coastal clash on Vancouver Island.
