Dinos Shutout Cougars

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY- After a week off, the University of Calgary Dinos got back in the win column as they shutout the Mount Royal University Cougars 4-0 at the Father David Bauer Arena on Friday night.

"Tonight we brought the heart and effort as a collective unit," said assistant captain Calaine Inglis. "The Crowchild Classic is always a lot of fun and a great rivalry."

In the first of two games in Crowchild Classic action this weekend, the Dinos used a strong opening period to set the tone throughout a complete performance. Calgary scored goals in each of the first two periods before putting the game out of reach in the third with two more markers off the sticks of Janelle Parent and Jenna Smith.

Hayley Dowling picked up her second win in as many appearances in her rookie season between the pipes with Calgary. Dowling stopped all 12 shots by Mount Royal for her first career CIS shutout.

The Dinos record their fourth win of the year, improving to 4-6-1 while the Cougars remain in eighth in the standings with a 2-9-0 mark.

"The girls are starting to execute and for us to be successful those things have to happen, it is a part of the buy-in process," said Dinos head coach Kelly Bechard on Friday evening's win.

The Dinos came out hungry and looking for a goal early in the first. Kira Sonnenberg looked like she would claim her first of the year only to be stopped by Jess Ross's glove on a 2-on-0.

Calgary had many opportunities to strike first but it wasn't until midway through the opening stanza that they put one on the scoreboard. Peterson redirected her first of the year on a point shot from Sarah Astle, making it 1-0.

It didn't take long for the Dinos to strike again. Minutes into the second period, Parent netted her eighth of the year on a behind the net pass from Jenna Smith to beat Ross through the five-hole.

Calgary continued to outshoot Mount Royal in the middle stanza 21-10. Ross held her ground on a 3-on-1 midway through the period and got lucky when Peterson put one off the post to hold the Dinos to two goals.

Parent wasn't going to settle for just one goal on Friday evening. Halfway through the third period, the talented scorer undressed a Mount Royal defender and then showed everyone a highlight-reel move before beating Ross with a backhand shot upstairs. Parent has scored at least one goal for the Dinos for the past 5 consecutive weekends.

"She is a very talented player, she was looking for support and then saw an opportunity and took it," explained Bechard. "The girls were having fun and you have success when everyone is having fun, as long as we accomplish the little things."

Just two minutes after the Dinos third goal, Smith connected on a pass and beat Ross glove side to increase the Dinos lead to four, rounding out the scoring.

The Dinos will faceoff against the Cougars again tomorrow night at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary; puck drop will be at 7 p.m.
