CALGARY - Playing in their final game at Hawkings Field this season, the University of Calgary Dinos were dealt a 5-0 setback by the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West field hockey on Sunday afternoon.
A spirited first half saw Calgary hold the powerful Thunderbirds off the scoresheet until the 23rd minute. Scoring their lone goal of the first half was Abigail Raye, who converted on a penalty corner.
The flood gates opened early in the second half as UBC threw everything they had at the Dino net.
In the 42nd minute, Hannah Haughn scored on a field goal. She was followed-up by two more field goals a minute apart by Natalie Sourisseau and
Katherine Gillis in the 48th and 49th minute.
The game could have gotten even further out of reach if it wasn't for a couple of nice saves from
Stephanie Petrowitsch, including a sprawling stop with the paddle of her stick.
The Thunderbirds did managed to record another tally in the 67th minute when Sophie Huijskens tapped one in to finish off the scoring for the day.
Not allowing a goal, Beatrice Francisco notched her second shutout of the weekend.
Post-game, Calgary honoured their five fifth-year players;
Claire Beaton,
Courtney Duggan,
Lindsay Koch,
Keara Chicquen and goaltender Petrowitsch.
The Dinos finish up their season on the road next weekend when they face the Victoria Vikes in their final two games of the regular season.
