BOX SCORE CALGARY - In the first game of the weekend, the University of Calgary Dinos' dropped 3-1 decision to the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

The opening frame contained most of the action with Manitoba scoring all three of their goals. Calgary tried to rally back, replacing Karly McLeod with Amanda Tapp for the second; it proved helpful as the Dinos' netted their first of the game but ultimately their last.

Calgary is now 2-4-1 on the season as Manitoba improves to 4-2-1 with tonight's win.

"Our two biggest struggles right now is finishing and consistency. We can't take shifts or periods off," said Head Coach Kelly Bechard on the game's outcome. "When we have a prime scoring opportunity we have to finish. That's why we are losing hockey games right now, we're not finishing."

Through 20 minutes of play it was clear that the Bisons did not come to Calgary to take it easy.

Less than a minute after puck drop, the Bisons opened the scoring. Alana Serhan netted her third of the campaign from the slot, redirecting a shot five-hole past McLeod.

The Bisons showed no signs of slowing down as they continued to apply pressure. That pressure paid off near the end of the first as Kyleigh Palmer shot the puck in front of the Dinos' net on the penalty kill. The shot would go off a defender's skate and in for her first of the year.

Manitoba added one more before the end of the first on the power play. Brenley Anderson tipped a shot from Nicole McGlenen to beat an uneasy McLeod. The tally was her third of the season.

Despite the 3-0 deficit, Calgary managed to outshoot their opposition 8-6 in the opening frame.

In an attempt to rally and fight back the Dinos' turned to veteran goalie Tapp for the second period.

"McLeod's performance wasn't the issue, we came out flat and hesitated in our D-zone which Manitoba took advantage of. Karly was the one who suffered," said Bechard on the goalie change. "After three goals in the first you have to make a change."

Although half of the middle stanza was played in Calgary's end, Janelle Parent got Calgary on the board with her third of the year midway through. Taking the puck end to end with a pass from Heather Berzins, Parent beat a Manitoba defenceman and backstop Amanda Schubert with a low blocker-side backhand shot, pulling the Dinos within two.

The third period did not lack in opportunity for the Dinos as the home team tried to close the gap. Jenna Smith got around a Bisons defenceman midway through the frame only to hit the post.

After a Manitoba timeout with five minutes left it looked as if they would find their fourth goal only to end up on the penalty kill. After Rachèle Bosc hit a Dino from behind and was thrown from the game, Calgary found themselves on the power play. However, the Dinos were unable to capitalize on the five-on-three at the end of the stanza.

Calgary was 0-5 on the power play rounding out the game with 24 shots. Manitoba was 50 percent on the power play, going 1-2 and finishing with 16 shots on net.

The two teams will meet up again tomorrow night at the Father David Bauer Arena, puck drops at 7p.m.
