BOX SCORE CALGARY – Riding a stellar goaltending performance from Danielle Dube, the UBC Thunderbirds salvaged a split of their weekend series with the Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory at Father David Bauer Arena.
Dube recorded 27 stops on 28 shots in the game to help her Thunderbirds remain above the .500 mark by knocking off the No. 2 team in the nation at 8-7-3. The loss snaps a six-game win streak for the Dinos, who drop to 14-3-1 on the year.
Amanda Tapp stopped 19 of the 21 shots she faced in a losing cause for the Dinos.
The win is UBC's first over the Dinos since Oct. 22, 2010, ending a span of 10 consecutive victories for the defending CIS champions.
The Thunderbirds found the twine first at the 8:28 mark of the first period. The original shot by Rebecca Unrau handcuffed Tapp and went off the tip of the Calgary netminder's glove, right to a waiting Nikola Brown-John. Brown-John's backhand eluded the diving Tapp on the glove side to give UBC the early lead.
Calgary put on the pressure from there, carrying most of the play in the final five minutes of the period – including multiple odd-man rushes. Dube managed to outwait
Hayley Wickenheiser on a two-on-one, forcing her to shoot wide, then stoned
Erika Mitschke on a wide-open breakaway moments later. On the strength of 10 Dube saves in the opening frame, UBC took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes.
UBC added to its lead just 92 seconds into the second period. After hemming the Dinos in deep on a long shift, Tatiana Rafter grabbed the puck behind the Calgary net and fed it in front to Nicole Saxvik – and the rookie one-timed it home through Tapp's five-hole to give the Thunderbirds a 2-0 lead.
Again slow to start the period – not recording a shot on goal until the 7:18 mark – the Dinos ended up with 13 in the period as they dominated the final half of the frame. Calgary got on the board just over the halfway point when Wickenheiser picked up the puck in her own zone and led a rush up-ice.
Calaine Inglis fed a return pass back to Wickenheiser in front, and while Dube was able to make the initial stop,
Tanya Morgan snapped up the rebound and buried it in the wide-open cage for her fifth of the season, bringing the Dinos within one.
Neither team was able to find the net in the third, despite three power play chances in the period for UBC and one for the Dinos. All three goals on the day were scored even strength, with UBC going 0-5 on the power play while the Dinos were unable to convert on any of their three chances.
The Dinos head east for their final games of the regular season outside the province of Alberta next weekend as they face the upstart Regina Cougars in a battle for first place in Canada West. UBC returns home to Vancouver, where they will host the last-place Lethbridge Pronghorns for a two-game set.
