BOX SCORE
CALGARY – In what looked to be a game that was headed to overtime, Dino Iya Gavrilova scored the game winner in a 1-0 win over the Manitoba Bisons for her ninth of the season at Father David Bauer Arena.
Earning the shut out on the night was back-up Jennifer Mallard, who got the start over Canada West leading goaltender Amanda Tapp.
Despite outscoring the Bisons 32-15, Calgary had trouble scoring all night long as Dee-Ana Marion stood on her head in net for Manitoba. Both teams went end to end on offence during the first period, but the Dinos really turned up the offence in the second, outshooting the Bisons 14-6.
Chances from a number of Dinos including Hayley Wickenheiser, Jenna Smith and Tanya Morgan looked to be the deciding factor a variety of times, but none were able to put it in the back of the net.
With less than five minutes left in the game, speedy forward Iya Gavrilova scored the game winner. With a pass from defenseman Megan Grenon, Gavrilova deeked a Bison defender and beat goaltender Marion on a backhanded shot to give Calgary the only goal necessary to win it. This was Gavrilova's ninth goal of the season, and third point of the weekend.
The sweep caps off a 4-0 run over the Manitoba Bisons in the regular season and the Dinos recorded their 18th win to improve to 18-3-1. Next up for Calgary is two away games in Edmonton to face their provincial rivals. Alberta currently sits in second in Canada West standings, behind the first-place Dinos.
