BOX SCORE CALGARY – A strong performance by the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades ensured them their first win of the season, 3-0 over the University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon at West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
The Dinos picked a huge victory on Saturday as they stunned the defending CIS champion Victoria Vikes 3-1. An own goal by Victoria appeared to give Calgary some jump as they carried that momentum through the remainder of the match, with two players netting their first CIS tallies.
Fraser Valley comes into town after playing Lethbridge to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The Cascades were still looking for their first win of the campaign and hold a 0-2-2 record.
Calgary looked to be on the verge of a penalty shot after a handball in the box by a Fraser Valley player in the first half. No call was made on the play though as the Cascades turned the ball back up the field and James Najman fired a shot past
Jordan Unreiner for the 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.
The home side was never able to create any serious scoring chances for themselves despite having some solid pressure in the opening half. Things didn't get any easier for the Dinos in the second as the Cascades held them to just seven shots on goal all game.
In the second half, Justin Sekhon was able to increase the Fraser Valley lead at the 57nd minute to 2-0. Sekhon throw the ball on net from the left end line. The ball then deflected off a Calgary defender and past Unreiner.
The Cascades pulled away at the 68th minute with their third goal of the contest. Off a corner kick, Sasa Plavsic took possession of the ball and booted it past the Dinos' keeper to round out the scoring.
“It's a disappointing result, our biggest problem is we just didn't work hard enough especially in the second,” said head coach
Brian McDonnell. “It was just basic mistakes that can be corrected with hard work, which were not doing; we're struggling with our fitness and keeping up in the second half of back-to-back games”.
Fraser Valley had 21 shots while Calgary had 11. Unreiner had 15 saves compared to Mark Village who had seven stops. Unreiner was replaced late in the game, giving Hayden Armstrong his first action of 2012. Armstrong didn't make any saves in his 17 minutes of action.
Calgary heads out on the road next weekend as they face-off against UNBC on Sept. 29 in Prince George.
