Dinos blank Pandas to reclaim first place

BOX SCORE CALGARY – As the game got longer, the No. 1-ranked University of Calgary Dinos got better, as they defeated the No. 4 University of Alberta Pandas 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.

Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, it was only fitting that these two evenly matched teams both skated away with a win from this weekend's set. In the opening game on Friday, the Pandas came out on top with two goals in the third period for a 4-2 triumph. Calgary improves to 8-1-1 on the year and takes over first place in the standings, while Alberta drops to a record of 8-2-0.

“The girls worked really hard tonight, the penalty kill was great and one goal was all it took,” said assistant coach Tara Hammer. “We looked at things that happened in the defensive zone last night and got a lot better results here this afternoon.”

It was a parade to the penalty box in the first period, a parade which featured a lot of red. Forced to play shorthanded for most of the first 20 minutes of play, the Dinos defenders did a superb job keeping the game scoreless.

Calgary faced a five-on-three disadvantage along with a four minute penalty right after. Amanda Tapp made 10 stops between the pipes in the first and ended the game with 20 saves. The Dinos' attack was held to only two shots for most of the opening stanza before getting their best pressure on a power play in the final minute.

After the Pandas controlled the first half of the second period, the Dinos got their offence going and took it to the Pandas in their zone. First-year netminder Lindsey Post denied all nine shots she faces while her counterpart Tapp made seven saves in the middle frame keeping the game deadlocked at zero.

Calgary finally opened the scoring at the 3:20 mark of the third period on the power play. Stephanie Zvonkovic used a seeing-eye shot from the point to get through a maze of legs and beat the Alberta goalie. The goal gave Zvonkovic her third of the season.

“We have been working on our power play a lot lately and they block a lot of shots, but we kept moving the puck to create openings so it went in,” explained Zvonkovic. “It was definitely exciting coming to the rink knowing were playing Alberta, we weren't overly concerned about first place this weekend, just concerned with playing our best hockey, which we did tonight.”

The Pandas had trouble reigniting their offence in the late stages of the third. The Dinos' defence did their job by limiting quality chances and helped Tapp secure her second shutout of the campaign.

The Dinos outshot the Pandas 21-20. Calgary went 1-7 on the power play, while Alberta was held off the score sheet on nine man advantages.

Calgary will now take a week off before visiting the Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 16-17. The Pandas will also take a break and be back in action on Nov. 16-17 as they host the Regina Cougars.
