TORONTO – The University of Calgary Dinos wrote another chapter in their Drive for Five Wednesday night, placing five players on the 2012 CIS football All-Canadian teams.
Running back
Steven Lumbala and offensive lineman
Kirby Fabien were named first team All-Canadians, while receiver
Chris Dobko, offensive lineman
Quinn McCaughan, and placekicker
Johnny Mark were named to the second team for the five-time defending Canada West champion Dinos.
The awards were handed out at the AMJ Campbell All-Canadian Banquet Wednesday at Ontario Place in Toronto, ahead of Friday night's Vanier Cup game at Rogers Centre.
The defending national champion McMaster Marauders led the way with nine selections, while Regina and Acadia received six picks each. The Dinos and the Laval Rouge et Or rounded out the leading quintet with five picks apiece.
It's the second straight first team selection for both Lumbala and Fabien, who also cracked the top team in 2011. McCaughan and Mark both make their second straight appearance on the second team, while the honour is a career first for Dobko.
RB Steven Lumbala
Lumbala earns his second straight first team All-Canadian nod. He dressed for seven of the eight games on the season but played in six, recording 636 yards on just 79 carries to lead all starting tailbacks in the conference with an 8.1 yards-per-carry average. He posted a career-high 217-yard performance Oct. 12 at Alberta, scoring three touchdowns, then bettered that performance in the hardy Cup with a 22-carry, 251-yard effort that landed him national offensive player-of-the-week honours. Lumbala was ranked the No. 5 overall prospect for the 2013 CFL Draft by the Canadian Football League's central scouting department. Through four seasons with the Dinos, he has 2,114 rushing yards – good enough for eighth on the school's all-time list.
OL Kirby Fabien
Also making his second consecutive appearance as a first team All-Canadian and his third overall after a second-team selection in 2009,
Kirby Fabien was once again a mainstay on the right side of the Dinos' offensive line. Fabien elected to return to school this fall after being drafted in the first round, No. 7 overall by the B.C. Lions in the 2012 CFL Draft. He was the Dinos' nominee for the J.P. Metras award as outstanding lineman in CIS football and earned his third conference all-star nod in four seasons.
OL Quinn McCaughan
McCaughan earns his second career All-Canadian honour after winning a fifth straight Canada West title with the Dinos to wrap up his CIS career. A five-year starter along the Dinos' offensive line, McCaughan took every snap for the Dinos this season at centre and was a key cog in Calgary's record-setting offence this year.
SB Chris Dobko
After a career season where he led the Dinos in receptions and receiving yards, fourth-year slotback
Chris Dobko earns his first All-Canadian selection. Playing just six games on the year, he averaged nearly 110 receiving yards per game, recording 50 catches for 659 yards and five touchdowns. He twice set the school record for receptions in a game with 13 Sept. 15 at Manitoba and 14 Oct. 27 against Manitoba, only to have that mark bettered by teammate
Jake Harty in the Hardy Cup.
PK Johnny Mark
Johnny Mark is now two-for-two in All-Canadian selections, earning second team status in each of his first two seasons of eligibility after an impressive debut with the Dinos. In 2012, Mark tied the conference record with 114 points on the season, leading the conference going 22-for-27 in field goals for an 81.5 per cent accuracy. His 22 field goals set a single-season school record, and he tied another all-time Dinos mark with six field goals in one game, Sept. 29 against Saskatchewan. He also tied the conference record for field goals in a playoff game with five in the Hardy Cup, matching Greg Vavra's record from the 1983 Vanier Cup.
