BOX SCORE CALGARY – The No. 4-ranked University of Alberta Pandas used two third period goals to knock off the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos 4-2 and reclaim first place in the conference on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
The defeat is the Dinos' first in regulation this season and puts them at 7-1-1 for the year. The Pandas improve to 8-1-0 and are now one point up on Calgary in the Canada West standings. These two sides will go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Dinos were without prolific scorer
Hayley Wickenheiser and head coach
Danielle Goyette, who were away representing Canada at the Four Nations Cup in Finland.
“We had a good start but fell apart a little bit, we had the momentum and almost scored a go-ahead goal in the second period but just missed,” commented assistant coach
Tara Hammer. “The girls know what they need to do with or without [Wickenheiser] here, we got away from our game plan and that can happen when anyone here.”
Calgary got on the scoreboard first at the 7:16 mark. An initial shot by
Iya Gavrilova was denied by Alberta goaltender Michala Jeffries, but
Jenna Smith had the puck deflect off her and in. The goal was Smith's fifth marker of the campaign.
A strong first period by the Pandas paved the way for them to tie the game at 16:44. Karla Bouke was stopped from in front of the net, but on the side and ready to pounce was Jessica Kampjes for her third goal of the year.
After the two teams traded momentum in the first period, it appeared as though they would head into the first intermission tied. A late scrum at the top of the blue paint allowed Gavrilova the chance she needed to bang the puck through Jeffries to make it 2-1. The late tally gave Gavrilova her seventh of the season at 19:41 of the first.
Controlling the majority of the possessions and with more shots on net, Alberta knotted the score at the 14:18 mark of the middle frame. Karla Bourke recorded her fourth goal of the year as she lifted a shot over
Amanda Tapp.
The Calgary offence was shut down during the final period and was able to only put three shots on net. Montanna Noyes poked an attempt through Tapp at the 4:38 mark of the final stanza to give the visitors their first lead of the evening.
Just under two minutes later, Alberta extended their advantage as second-year forward Janelle Froehler recorded her first CIS goal to round out the scoring.
“I think when we were in their zone tonight we put on some good pressure,” said Hammer. “The main thing was in our zone, they hemmed us in pretty good.”
After playing another game against Alberta this weekend, Calgary will take a week off then visit the Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 16-17. The Pandas will also take a break and be back in action on Nov. 16-17 as they host the Regina Cougars.
