BOX SCORE CALGARY – There wasn't a lot of offence on either side, but the University of Calgary Dinos wouldn't need much as they knocked off the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 as they moved closer to a playoff spot on Saturday afternoon at West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
The victory gives the Dinos 20 points on the season with their 6-4-2 record, a three-point cushion over the Huskies for second place in the Prairie Division. However, with Lethbridge's upset win of Alberta, the Horns remain within shouting distance and, with three games left to go, plenty is still at stake in the conference standings.
Weather wasn't an influential factor in the opening half as the two sides only had to deal with the cold temperature. Despite a clear field, neither team could get any offence going as the Dinos had no shots on goal in the first half and the Huskies had five on
Jordan Unreiner.
With the snow beginning to fall again in the second half, Calgary finally got a chance on net and made it count. A shot from the left side by
Michael McKinnon got past Mark Diakiw to put the home team up 1-0.
“We are guaranteed one of these type games almost once a year, especially when you play in Alberta at the end of October,” said head coach
Brian McDonnell. “The conditions do dictate your tactics and it becomes a territorial game and you want to be in their end.”
The Huskies put some of their best pressure on in the second half after allowing a goal. The offence went to the net and caused some scrambles in front of Unreiner, but coulnd't get anything past the goalkeeper.
One thing that stopped Saskatchewan from getting more opportunities was the number of offsides. The visitors had eight off sides while Calgary had none.
Saskatchewan led in shots 11-5. Unreiner made six saves for Calgary while Diakiw stopped just two attempts on the other end of the field.
“Being at McMahon, playing on the turf tomorrow, they will clean it off and I think you will see a much better game,” added McDonnell.
Calgary and Saskatchewan will close out their seasons tomorrow afternoon as they play a rematch at McMahon Stadium, with kickoff set for 2:15 p.m.
