First-place Dinos sweep Vikes to open season

| By:
CALGARY – All-Canadian Courtney Campbell potted two goals to lift the University of Calgary Dinos to a 3-1 win over the Victoria Vikes in Canada West field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field.

The victory completes a two-game season-opening sweep of the Vikes by the Dinos, who suddenly find themselves alone in first place in the conference standings through one week of the 2011 season at 2-0 after UBC and Alberta split their weekend series in Edmonton.

“The Dinos in first place” is not a familiar phrase when it comes to field hockey, but don't tell this year's edition of the team that. An impressive effort right from the opening whistle put Calgary up early and they stayed there, grabbing a second two-goal win in as many days over Victoria.

“It's fantastic and it's a nice feeling,” smiled CIS coach of the year Jenn Swagar after the contest, “but it's time to move on to UBC. The results will come if we play the way we should – we got out of our game a little in the second half today and we were all over the place sometimes, and that's not our style of play.”

All four goals in the contest came in the first half, including a six-minute span with three rapid-fire goals. But it was a Campbell's first marker that set the tone, as she beat Victoria 'keeper Leah Farnan less than 60 seconds into the game – much to the delight of her coach.

“The first three minutes yesterday were horrible and scary, so I told the team we needed to improve our first three minutes today,” said Swagar. “They did that, and Courtney put in a quick one.”

Carolina Romeo, the 19-year-old fourth-year veteran, scored the eventual game-winner in the 18th minute to put Calgary up 2-0. Less than four minutes hence, the Vikes notched their first goal of the season when a Victoria midfielder sent a ball up the field that the Dinos left, assuming it was headed wide. Victoria's Marisa Davidson got a stick on it, however, getting just enough to beat Calgary netminder Steph Petrowitsch five-hole.

Bouncing back quickly from the defensive lapse, Calgary came right back down the field and Campbell restored the two-goal cushion less than two minutes later.

“We allowed the ball to go through, and we need to be more aware on the defensive end,” said Swagar. “But it's the mark of a veteran team to be assertive after a goal and working to get it back.

The teams traded chances in the second half, with both Petrowitsch and Farnan called upon to make key stops to preserve the final score as 3-1 in favour of the host Dinos.

Both teams play in the Pacific time zone next weekend, with Victoria returning home to host the Alberta Pandas while Calgary makes the trek to Vancouver to face the UBC Thunderbirds.
