Dinos drop tough one to Bisons

| By:

WINNIPEG - After taking two consecutive shootout losses the night before, the #6 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team cleansed the  bitter taste left in their mouths in beating the #7 ranked University of Calgary Dinos 2-0.

BOX SCORE

The teams battled Saturday, February 5 evening in what would be the Bisons final home game before the playoffs, and the Dinos final regular season game. With the result of this game, Manitoba climbs to 14-5-3 on their season and Calgary will fall to 16-6-2.

There was barely a full-strength moment in the first period, as Calgary played extremely aggressively, and Manitoba committed a couple of offences themselves.  The first penalty of the game would be to the Dinos' Melissa Zubick, who would sit for two off a tripping call.

After going 1/14 on the power play the previous night, the Bisons were eager to display some improvement, and that's exactly what they would do, as Becca King placed herself strategically in order to tap in a huge rebound, and put Manitoba up 1-0.

Calgary would receive four more penalties in the first, but the Bisons could not convert on any of the power play opportunities. The first period would come to a close at 1-0 for Manitoba.

The second period was fiercely competitive, though neither team managed to find a marker. It was not for a lack of trying though, as the goaltenders on both ends of the ice needed to stand on their heads more than once during the period in order to keep the puck out of their respective nets. Both sides served a single penalty each, but neither could convert on the power play.  The score would remain at a 1-0 advantage for Manitoba at the end of the second.

The Dinos resumed their penalty-grabbing play in the third period, and as we neared the halfway mark of the period, they would pay the price for it.  Calgary just had a player released from the sin bin when Chelsea Braun, with one assist already tonight, sniped a shot right past Dinos net minder Amanda Tapp, giving Manitoba a 2-0 lead.

Any offence that Calgary tried to generate from that point on was handled easily by Manitoba, who would cruise to a well-earned 2-0 win, and the fifth shutout of the season for Leiette Klassen, who turned away 17 shots.

The Manitoba Bisons will play next against UBC on their opponents' home turf on February 11, 2011.  The weekend series against UBC will be the Bisons' final two games in the regular season.
