Bisons shock Dinos to end playoff run

| By:
WINNIPEG – With a 3-2 overtime victory in tow from the night before, the Manitoba Bisons repeated the same scoreline in regulation as they defeated the Calgary Dinos 3-2 to sweep their best-of-three Canada West semi-final series Saturday night in Winnipeg.

BOX SCORE

The Bisons advance to the Canada West final against the Alberta Pandas and earn a berth to the CIS championship in Waterloo, Ont., while Hayley Wickenheiser and the Dinos were eliminated from playoff contention.

Amy Lee's five-on-three power play goal with just over five minutes to play broke open a 2-2 tie and stood up as the eventual winner as the Dinos ran into all kinds of penalty trouble in the third.

Calgary never led in the contest, twice coming back from one-goal deficits – but the Bisons always had an answer.

Manitoba didn't waste much time before getting things going. Less than two minutes after the drop of the puck in the first period, Tammy Brade got the Bisons on the board after slapping home a one-timer in front of the net, fed across to her by Becca King, and it was 1-0 for Manitoba.

With the Bisons holding on to the lead, Wickenheiser's presence was definitely noticeable. Things would improve for the Dinos around the halfway mark of the first period, after Manitoba netminder Tara Lacquette handed a big rebound to Elana Lovell, who snuck in behind her and buried the chance, tying the game at 1-1.

Less than four minutes later, Manitoba regained the lead when a turnover in Calgary's zone put the puck on Jordyn Hrehirchuk's stick and she sniped it top corner for her first of the playoffs.

The Dinos opened the second period on a sour note, taking a body-checking penalty a mere 10 seconds in. In what was a disastrous power play for Manitoba, Calgary managed to kill off the minor penalty, and almost picked up a shorthanded goal after a hazardous giveaway by Lacquette.

Calgary's best chance in the second period came when they had more than a minute of five-on-three time of their own, but the Dinos were unable to break Manitoba's defensive shell and the second period ended with the score still 2-1.

With less than 11 minutes to play in the third, Wickenheiser got her only point of the night when her point shot was tipped by Melissa Zubick past Lacquette to tie it up, setting the stage for Lee's power play heroics five minutes later.

The final nail in the Dinos' coffin came with close to four minutes left to play, when Wickenheiser, would sit for two off of a holding call, taking her out of the game for two minutes down the stretch.

It was the final game for four fifth-year seniors in Dinos uniforms as Nicole Kuglin, Rebecca Niehaus, Cait O'Hara, and Shannon Davidson skated off the ice after representing the University of Calgary for the final time.
