LANGLEY, B.C. - The fourth-ranked University of Calgary Dinos extended their streak of perfection to 11 matches, overcoming a 25-15 drubbing in the opening set to defeat No. 3 Trinity Western 3-1 Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.

The 15-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 win keeps the Dinos perfect at 11-0, while the loss drops the Spartans to 8-3. It was a rematch of the 2010 CIS championship final, which Calgary won by the same 3-1 score, on the floor that will host the 2011 national tournament.
The Spartans looked impressive to start the match as they dominated early to take the first set 25-15. TWU quickly jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the first break, which they extended to 16-10 by the second break before cruising to the 10 point win. The Spartans finished the set hitting 14.3 percent, while their blocking and defence limited the Dinos to negative 2.9 percent hitting.
In the second set things started to turn towards Calgary. The Dinos increased their hitting by 45 percent as they hit 42.9 percent in the set, while TWU only hit for 17.6 percent. The offensive explosion allowed the Dinos to take the second set 25-22. The two teams were even at 8-8, but Calgary took over with an 8-2 run to lead 16-11 at the second break. The Dinos maintained the five point lead to 24-19, when TWU closed to 24-22 before the Dinos'
Graham Vigrass, the reigning Canada West athlete of the week, took the final point of the set to even the match at 1-1.
Calgary maintained their momentum into the third set where they led 8-5 and 16-9 before TWU finally found some life. The Spartans clawed back to trail 23-22 after a kill by Rudy Verhoeff, but they were unable to get even as the Dinos too k the next two points to take the set 25-22 and a two to one lead in sets.
The fourth set was even early with the Dinos leading 8-7 at the first beak. Calgary would seal the match over the middle portion of the set when they outscored TWU 8-4 to take a 16-11 lead at the second break. The Dinos held off a TWU charge, which saw the Spartans close to 22-19, before taking the final set of the match 25-20.
Josh Doornenbal with 18 kills and four blocks and Rudy Verhoeff with 14 kills and 18 digs led the Spartans, while Vigrass with 19 kills and four blocks and
Allen Meek with 10 kills led the Dinos. TWU setter Ben Ball finished with 40 set assists while his counterpart with Calgary,
Jay Blankenau, finished with 39 set assists.
The two teams will match up again Saturday night at 8 p.m. MT.
