Birds take season opener

CALGARY- A pair of second-half goals by Vickie Pearson paced the UBC Thunderbirds to a 4-1 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field.

The Thunderbirds controlled play for the opening 25 minutes, and were rewarded at 7:30 when Miranda Mann converted an opportunity low stick side to elude Dinos goaltender Stephanie Petrowitsch.

Momentum turned sharply in the 28th minute when Kaitlin Longworth replied for the Dinos. She deflected a long corner sent in by Rachel Paul high into the upper left corner of the net over the outstretched arm of goaltender Bea Francisco.

Carrying that momentum into halftime, the Dinos entered the second half energized and maintained pressure for the first ten minutes, pinning the Thunderbirds deep in their own half. Unable to capitalize, that energy was deflated at 48:30 when Pearson slotted a shot just inside the left post off of a short corner to regain the one-goal advantage for UBC.

Pearson would add to the UBC lead 11 minutes later when she received a nifty back pass from Caitlin Evans and fired it past Petrowitsch into the low right corner.

Ceilidh MacLeod added an insurance marker for the Thunderbirds in the 63rd minute to put the match out of reach.

Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar was disappointed with her team's effort.

“I expected more,” explained Swagar. “It's confidence, and having the ability to play hard all the time. We're going to change some positions and work on utilizing our speed against their defense for tomorrow.”

The Dinos and Thunderbirds will meet again tomorrow at Hawkings Field at 1:00.
