Dinos sweep Wesmen, finish regular season 13-5

WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos completed a weekend sweep against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23) victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Calgary also won the opening match of the weekend series, Friday night by a score of 3-1. The Dinos finish the regular season with a record of 13-5. Winnipeg completes their regular season with a record of 11-7.

Graham Vigrass led the attack for Calgary finishing with a match high 13 kills. Curtis James finished with nine kills and Oleg Podporin added eight kills and two blocks. Setter Ciaran McGovern had 31 assist and a match high 14 digs.

Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 11 kills and three blocks. Andrew Town, playing in his last regular season home match had ten kills and three blocks. Matt Schriemer added eight kills and three blocks. Setter Dan Lother had 33 assists and a team high seven digs.

Calgary held a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout of the opening set but gained momentum to extend their lead to 16-11 at the second break. Calgary went on to win the opening set 25-17. The Dinos finished the first set with an impressive .462 hitting percentage.

Winnipeg regrouped in the second set leading 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Strong net play by Winnipeg's front of Justin Duff, Matt Dueck and Andrew Town led the Wesmen to a 20-16 lead late in the set. Calgary mounted a comeback led by Graham Vigrass, with three kills to give Calgary a 23-21 lead. A Calgary service error cut the Dinos lead to 23-22 . Oleg Podporin's kill set up set point at 24-22. Andrew Town smashed one down the line to cut the lead to 24-23 but Calgary got the next point to win the second set 25-23.

In set number three, Winnipeg jumped out to an 8-7 lead at the first timeout only to see Calgary hold the advantage at 16-15 at the second break.  The teams exchanged points to 22-22, when Calgary closed out the match scoring three of the next four points to close out the third set at 25-23.

The Dinos clinched second place in the Canada West standings on Friday night and will host the Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal Feb. 25-27 in the Jack Simpson Gym.
