Swagar, Petrowitsch earn Canada West major awards

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos concluded their 2010 season with an emphatic 5-1 victory over the University of Alberta Pandas Sunday at Hawkings Field.

Carolina Romeo scored twice, while Courtney Campbell, Serena Lockhart, and Keara Chicquen contributed a goal apiece for the Dinos.

Alberta's Jennifer Cousineau scored in the dying seconds to spoil Dinos goaltender Stephanie Petrowitsch's shutout bid.

A day after the Dinos had their playoff aspirations shattered in a 3-1 upset loss to the Pandas, Calgary played with passion and energy for a full seventy minutes to earn their largest margin of victory of the season.

“That's what we need to do, run and play with flow, and not be tentative,” stated Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar.

The Dinos had the Pandas on their heels from the start. They nearly scored one minute in when Kaitlyn Longworth deflected a pass from Lockhart inches over the bar. They would continue to hound the Panda's goal and were finally rewarded in the 19th minute when Campbell made a strong run down the right wing and found Romeo alone in front, who redirected the ball past Alberta goaltender Alyssa Greco for a 1-0 lead.

Calgary used a penalty corner to double their lead in the 24th minute when Campbell received a pass from Lockhart at the top of the circle and hammered a low shot inside the right post past a diving Greco.

Two minutes later, Greco was hung out to dry once again as her defense lost track of the Dinos attackers. After a scramble for the ball in front of the Alberta goal line, Romeo came out with it and slid it into the empty cage to make it 3-0.

With the final result never in doubt, Calgary used the large lead to freely substitute players in and out for the remainder of the game.

The Dinos end the season third place in Canada West with a 5-5-2 record. It is the best the team has done in its four years under Swagar's guidance.

“I'm happy that we've progressed and that we know we can win,” Swagar said. “Going forward we are going to address the mental aspect of the game, and get our team prepared to play at a high level game in and game out.”

Following the match, the Canada West all-stars and awards were handed out. Swagar was named the Canada West coach of the year for the third time in her four seasons at the helm of the Dinos program, while Petrowitsch earned the conference's nod for the Gail Wilson award as Outstanding Contributor.

Romeo, Campbell, and Longworth were named 2010 all-stars for the Dinos, while Jackie Trautman and Jennifer Peacock grabbed all-star nods for the Alberta Pandas.
