Pandas offence explodes to eliminate Dinos

| By:
CALGARY – The University of Alberta Pandas officially eliminated the University of Calgary Dinos from playoff contention Saturday as they picked up their first victory of the season by a 3-1 score at Hawkings Field.

Kincso Santha, Jennifer Peacock, and Carly Flemming scored for the Pandas, while a late Courtney Campbell penalty stroke was all the offence the Dinos could muster.

In a game that was a must-win, the Dinos provided an effort they will be rueing for a long time. Despite dominating possession for much of the game, they were unable to generate quality scoring chances against the Pandas defence. Their frustration led to poor defensive breakdowns that Alberta capitalized on three times.

Santha opened the scoring in the tenth minute. After a nifty deke on Calgary defender Rachel Paul, she raced in alone on Calgary goalkeeper Stephanie Petrowitsch and slotted the ball five-hole to get the Pandas on the board.

Peacock sent the Pandas into the half-time break on a high when she received a penalty corner pass from Jacqueline Trautman and hammered a shot low inside the left post to earn a 2-0 lead.

Visibly stunned, the Dinos collaborated to determine what needed to be done to get on the scoresheet early in the second half.

They nearly succeeded two minutes in when Serena Lockhart sent a cross through the Alberta crease that just eluded the stick of Janell Lautermilch.

Calgary continued to press for the next five minutes but the Pandas put the game out of reach when Evelyn Wise made a great pass that Flemming deposited for Alberta's third goal.

The offensive outburst for the Pandas exceeded their collective output from the previous ten games in which they had only tallied twice.

The result means that Victoria and UBC will represent Canada West at the CIS championships in Guelph Nov. 4-7.

Calgary and Alberta will wrap up the season tomorrow when they meet again at Hawkings Field at 1 p.m.
