CALGARY – Riding
Keara Chicquen's first CIS goal, the University of Calgary Dinos shut out the University of Victoria Vikes in a 1-0 decision under sunny Calgary skies Saturday afternoon.
The only tally of the game came 11 minutes into the first half from Chicquen, a second-year forward. Receiving a
Kaitlyn Longworth feed from the baseline, Chicquen ripped a shot low and to the right of Vikes goalie Kaitlyn Williams.
Despite the early tally, the Dinos faced a long road to victory due to a relentless attack from the Vikes. The Achilles heel for the visitors was the Dinos defence, a unit that didn't allow any real scoring chances until late in the second half. The Calgary defense managed to repel a half-dozen short corners including one good Victoria chance that was deflected over the net and another that was disassembled at the top of the circle when Longworth stripped the attacker and cleared the end.
The 'keeper for the Dinos, an injured
Stephanie Petrowitsch, didn't face any real shots until late in the second half when Vikes forward Jasleen Aujla managed an open shot from the short corner. Petrowitsch gloved that one down to end the scoring threat. Her final big save came with two minutes left when she stretched for a lunging save on a Vikes short corner denying the visitors any points.
Victoria goalie Kaitlyn Williams faced some similar shots in the second half as she blocked two high-circle attempts from Calgary forward
Michelle Roydhouse early in the second half.
“It was nice to win,” Dinos head coach
Jenn Swagar noted after the victory. “It still was not our best game, we had lots of injuries including concussions, neck and shin injuries.”
The loss is Victoria's first of the season, dropping them to 3-1-1. The Dinos go above .500 with a 3-2 record heading into Sunday's rematch. That game starts at 1 p.m. on Hawkings Field in Calgary.
