CALGARY – This weekend the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team will host their home opener Friday night against the Lethbridge Pronghorns before both teams head south for the Horns home opener 24 hours later.
The Dinos enter the weekend with a 1-1 record after they split a close-fought series with Regina. The first game of that series ended in the Dinos' favor, 4-3, with
Hayley Wickenheiser leading the way with a three-point performance. Regina took the second bout 2-1 after Rianne Wright snuck a pair of goals past
Amanda Tapp to hand the Dinos their first loss.
Lethbridge enters the weekend with an 0-2 record after falling to Saskatchewan in 2-0 and 3-2 decisions in Saskatoon.
Last season both the Dinos and 'Horns ended up pulling up the rear in Canada West, with Lethbridge finishing two points behind Calgary. Part of that finish can be attributed to the fact that the Dinos won three out of four encounters with Lethbridge, all of them near the end of the season.
Look to the Dinos offence to provide some scoring after four of their players broke into the top 10 list for Canada West scoring. Those include Wickenheiser with two goals and two assists, with rookie
Maddison Gee and veteran
Elana Lovell notching a goal and assist each to come in behind her. Fifth-year captain Cait O'Hara rounds out the Dinos' point-getters following her two assist weekend.
The Dinos' first home game faces off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. Lethbridge's home opener follows on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
