LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Needing a win to keep pace in a crowded Canada West playoff picture, the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team came into Lethbridge and upended the Pronghorns by a score of 6-2 Friday evening.
BOX SCORE
In their previous visit to Nicholas Sheran Arena, the Dinos were swept by the Horns, which was the start of the Horns' team-best winning streak. This time, however, the Dinos drew first blood in the weekend series.
The Horns jumped out of the gate at the 1:21 mark of the first period when Logan Lavorato (Lethbridge, AB, 4th) took a feed from Kris Snopek (Cranbrook, BC, 1st) and chipped it over the pad of Dinos keeper Jeff Weber (Ottawa, ON, 4th). With time slipping away in the first frame, the Dinos would draw even as Brock Nixon (Russell, MB, 1st) one-timed a rebound over the right pad of Horns goalie Scott Bowles (Penticton, BC, 2nd). The Dinos held a slim 7-6 shots advantage over the Horns during the opening frame.
The Dinos took the lead at the 4:18 mark of the second period, courtesy of a point blast from Dan Ehrman (Calgary, AB, 3rd) that beat a screened Bowles five hole. Calgary added a third goal late in the second on the powerplay; Reid Jorgensen (Vancouver, BC, 2nd) drove hard to the net and fired a puck off the crossbar that bounced right on the stick of Paul Gentile (Calgary, AB, 4th) who fired it top shelf past a confused Bowles. The Dinos carried the majority of the play in the second, outshooting the Horns by a total of 13-6 in the period.
The Horns drew within one of the Dinos just over a minute into the third. As time expired in a Dinos penalty, Jason Roberts (Spiritwood, SK, 4th) notched his ninth goal of the year and gave his team hopes of a comeback. Roberts had a chance to even the game up on a 2 on 1 with Dustin Moore (Red Deer, AB, 2nd), but the play would be broken up by a Dino defender. Kyle Annesley (Moose Jaw, SK, 3rd) restored the Dinos' two goal lead shortly after the Horns opportunity.
With Bowles out of position after making a spectacular save, Nixon would add his second goal of the game to put his team up by three, by lunging at a puck in the crease. Calgary added a sixth and final goal at 18:23 of the third with Teegan Moore (Thompson, MB, 2nd) tapping a cross crease pass from Nixon, who picked up his third point in the game.
The Horns will try to salvage a weekend split with the Dinos, with the teams slated to meet up again Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena, puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
