CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team scored two shorthanded goals, and
Carl Tetachuk made 34 saves, in a 4-1 crosstown road win over the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday night. The result handed Mount Royal its first loss of the season.
The win was Calgary's second straight after the Dinos dropped their first three games of the season. It improved their Canada West record to 2-3-0, while the Cougars fell to 2-1-0.
Mount Royal outshot Calgary 35-31. Tetachuk allowed only one goal, and the Dinos' penalty kill did more than hold the line. Calgary turned two of the Cougars' power plays into goals.
The first came just past the first-period midway point. On a shorthanded odd-man rush,
Riley Gannon's pass took an unusual bounce off
Jake Poole and into the net, giving Poole his third goal of the season.
Calgary doubled its lead late in the frame on its own power play. With less than three minutes left in the period,
Brendan Lee found
Hayden Pakkala at the right faceoff circle. Pakkala sniped a shot over the sprawling goaltender, popping the water bottle on the net, for his fourth goal of the year.
The Dinos struck shorthanded again in the second period. Killing a five-on-three with just over five minutes left in the period,
Logan Hauer was sprung as he came out of the penalty box. Hauer took a pass from Pakkala and rang a shot off the post and in to make it 3-0.
Mount Royal answered on the same power play less than 30 seconds later. Bowden Singleton beat Tetachuk with a hard wrist shot from the left side for his first goal of the season, with assists to Kai Matthew and Vaughn Watterodt.
The Cougars pushed for a second goal, outshooting Calgary 15-14 in the middle period, but Tetachuk held firm. He made 14 saves in the second and 11 more in the third to protect the lead.
Carter Massier put the game away with about seven and a half minutes left in regulation. Massier deflected a shot through a screen in front for his first goal of the season, with
Connor Horning and
Stephen Kirkpatrick earning the assists.
Pakkala led Calgary with a goal and an assist. The Dinos held Mount Royal to one goal on four power-play opportunities and went 1-for-4 on their own power play. Zach Zahara made 27 saves for the Cougars.
The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Oct. 24 when they host the Mount Royal Cougars at 5 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena. Tickets are available at GoDinos.com/Tickets.
