T-Birds finish off Dinos

| By:

VANCOUVER – The UBC T-Birds (4-0-0) finally capitalized on a pair of late short-corners to extend their winning streak to four games to begin the year, as they downed the Calgary Dinos (0-4-0) 2-0 at Wright Field on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep.

Coming off an 8-0 rout of the Dinos on Saturday, the 'Birds seemed to be setting the pace of the game from start to finish once again, and they were able to generate opportunities at the offensive end, but they struggled to find the back of the net in the early going.

“We actually played really well and dominated the game, but we just couldn't find the net today,” said UBC coach Hash Kanjee. “I think we must have used up all our goals yesterday.”

It wasn't until the 63rd minute of the contest that the 'Birds finally got on the board, thanks to Victoria Pearson's fifth goal of the weekend. Pearson received the ball off a short-corner and managed to thread the needle through the crowd in front of the Calgary goal and beat Dinos goalie Stephanie Petrowitsch to put her side up 1-0.

“Calgary made it tough on us today but I was happy with our play overall,” said Kanjee. “We had a tough time finding goals but we will take the three points and move on.”

Kathryn Machperson added another tally on a short-corner as time expired in the 70th minute.

UBC will remain at home next weekend to take on the Victoria Vikes. The Vikes were handed their first loss of the season today by the Alberta Pandas, so UBC is the only remaining unbeaten team in Canada West. The two sides will square off at Wright Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
